Hi, I will be having the lap band surgery on august 23. My bmi is a little lower than most of the people that I have read about. But high enough to be a canidate for lap band surgery. Is anyone else having or had surgery with a bmi in the range of 35-37?:help:

There is a thread over on the SUPPORT board for Lower BMI bandsters.. check it out.

In the US the BMI (Insurance requirement) is 35-50, in other countries you may be banded as a precautionary measure.

Hi, I am going for my first visit with Dr Spivak on Wednesday in Houston. My BMI is 37.2. I am self pay so I didn't worry about the insurance turning me down. I know I am overweight! Good luck with everything...kit.

I am self-pay and I began with a BMI of 32.5. I researched the band extensively and I believe it was exactly right for myself!!!! Good Luck!

You are the first one I found that shows a USA doctor with a low bmi. I am going to the doctor Thursday, and was afraid I was wasting his and my time. I have a bmi of 32, but are going to be self pay also. How is it going for you?

I thought mine was low, but 32 wow. I haven't had surgery yet. I am going to the doctor tomorrow and very anxious to get started.

I am scheduled for 08/31 and my BMI is 39. It doesn't seem there are too many low BMI folks out there. My insurance won't cover any WLS for anyone under BMI of 50 so I am self pay. Going to TJ, Mexico.

I am really curious about the experience of others with low bmi too. My BMI the day of the surgery was 30.2, and from the point I called the center, to the date my surgery was scheduled it was exactly 2 weeks, and it will be 2 weeks since I was banded tomorrow. Considering I only learned about this procedure the day I called, I must sheepishly admit that the only homework I did was reading web sites the day before my consultation. So far so good and now that I feel better, no regrets so far, but I really, really hope that after what I have gone through physically (not to mention the financial expense), my experience is as good as many of the others I have read about here and I am able to lose the 50 or 60 pounds I need to. I have only managed to lose 2 pounds since the day of my surgery, and considering I am still on full fluids, I am not too impressed with myself.

2 down, is better than up...Have you had a fill yet? I would wait until then to expect weight loss. I got a surgery date of 8/31...I only have 50 pounds, so I will look forward to loosing a pound a week on the average. That would been I would be at goal in a year...

I was self pay, bmi of 35 with 65 pounds to lose. I've lost 26# in 4 months. Now losing at a rate of about 1#/week (avg). I eat what I like, just less of it and I exercise at the gym 5x/week. I absolutely love my band!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
