SarahSleeve 170 Posted April 3, 2016 I'm just starting and curious. I think I'm going to be trying for a late September/early October surgery. I have my first intro seminar this month and while I would love to get it done before Summer, I know most surgeons will take longer than that. It either has to be early June or not until Sept/Oct. Summer's not good for me (home with the kids). So just looking for some basic timelines. Thanks! Sent from my Nexus 5 using the BariatricPal App
wendilin 29 Posted April 3, 2016 I went to my seminar in February, had my first appointment March 7th, insurance requires 6 months supervised diet, so they can first send to insurance September 7th. Hoping to get sleeved in September yet as my mother in law is having surgery on October 3rd so she can help me and then I can help her. 1excited 15 Posted April 4, 2016 It really depends on your insurance company. My insurance company required 3 months supervised diet. During that time I worked on diet and exercise and getting all required clerence Sent from my SM-G530T using the BariatricPal App
treblecutie23 318 Posted April 4, 2016 I consulted in March 2015. Did 6 months supervised diet and then was scheduled for November 2015 (first available for my surgeon). Waiting sucks!!!! But I'm thankful I'm that it gave me plenty of time to prepare mentally ((mostly by reading other people's journeys on here)) and start making healthier choices. Good luck!!! texasnurse 7 Posted April 4, 2016 My first appointment with my surgeon was 02-17-16. I had my psy & nutritional consults done by 03-10-16. My surgeon's office sent in the request for approval after the nutritional consult was done. They got the approval 03-17-16. My surgeon requires his patients to have an EGD, which I had done on 03-23-16. I am scheduled for surgery on 04-26-16. I could have been scheduled for 04-19-16, but that was not a good day for me. My insurance company required a psy & nutritional consult plus documentation that I had trying to lose weight for at least six month within the last two years. I have been a member of WW for a long time, so I had the documentation showing the attempts at weight loss. If I had not been in WW or had documentation of trying to lose weight in the last two years, I would have had to be on a supervised weight loss program for the next six months before I could be approved. Different insurance companies require different things.
livvsmum 2,369 Posted April 4, 2016 It was supposed to be 6 months, but be prepared for more. By the time I got through all the testing, etc that was required it ended up being 8.5 months.
Valentina 2,642 Posted April 4, 2016 My insurance company required 4 months, so 4 months it was. It seemed like I needed that much time to get in all of the required testing and seminars, so the time passed quickly.
sharonsjourney 16 Posted April 5, 2016 I had my first appointment with surgeon on 1/7/16 and had surgery on 3/7/16. So in two months I completed a battery of tests, X-rays, evals, etc. but I was extremely driven to get things done quickly. Also I was lucky insurance did not require a lengthly supervised diet. One month post op and lost 24 lbs since surgery, so thrilled!

KristenLe 5,979 Posted April 8, 2016 My insurance requires 6 months of a supervised weight loss plan. I was disappointed that I had to wait that long. I'm also hoping for a Sep/Oct date. Sent from my XT1254 using the BariatricPal App
kjhughes90 7 Posted April 8, 2016 My insurance requires 6 months as well! Fingers crossed for Aug surgery! Sent from my SM-N900V using the BariatricPal App
courtney2016 5 Posted April 8, 2016 My consult was in March. My insurance requires a 6 month supervised diet. I'm using that time to kick my food addiction and start working out. 27lbs lost in January. Sent from my SM-G900P using the BariatricPal App
SarahSleeve 170 Posted April 8, 2016 I had my first meeting with the hospital today and they said they generally run about 6-7 months pre-op depending on insurance requirements, sometimes as fast as 4 months. My ins doesn't appear to require a supervised diet, as long as my doctor will sign off on my previous attempts. I have a bunch of spreadsheets from the past 5 years with weights and what I was trying (with calorie intake, etc), so I'm hoping this is one of the times that being note/spreadsheet obsessed will work out in my favor. I guess the next step is to get an appt with my PCP and go from there getting the documents in order and referral on file.
