Concerned because of sisters weightloss failures.

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled to see my surgeon in 2 weeks and hope to have my surgery in May. I have two sisters that had gastric bypass. One sister was very successful for the first couple of years and then gained most of her weight back. My other sister never lost more than 20 lbs and is the biggest she has ever been. I'm hoping since I KNOW it isn't an easy fix I will be successful LONG TERM!

If you have to utilize knowledge that has come about from the failure of others then so be it...

Use it however you need to...

That puts you ahead of either of them already...

I have to tell you that for me, it is difficult to fit the power of the restriction. Like anything, you can find a way if you try. Your learned behavior is at odds with what your stomach can handle. It is not easy, but you now have an incredible tool at your disposal. The only time I start gaining a little back is when I go off the tried and true program of Protein and vegetables and start introducing junk food back into my diet. No surprises there.

So ... why do you think your sisters wasted their own WLS opportunities? What did they do that made them not lose weight and/or regain their weight?

If you know why your sisters were not successful, then you have some powerful knowledge to put to good use. You know what doesn't work. You know what you don't want to do.

Good luck!

What others said....take a good hard look at why your sisters failed. Did they follow the program? When did they stop? Why did they stop? What did they eat? What did they drink? What poor eating habits did they give up or not give up? What new coping mechanisms did they develop for dealing with life? Were they seeing a therapist or getting regular counseling.

You have first hand experiences to learn from and improve. Use that advantage. And I'm sure it's obvious, but just remember, long term WLS success is all about your head, not your stomach. Make sure you focus on what you need to be prepared for the mental battle as well as the physical one. Obesity is just as much of a mental illness as a physical state and no simple surgery is going to "cure" you.

Their failures certainly won't determine your success, but it could definitely define it. Like others so eloquently said, use it to your benefit. Learn and try not to make the same mistakes they did.

I would also try to not to use them as a support system. I cannot see them being supportive of your surgery without projecting thier negative experiences on to you. I could be wrong, too.

I assume by not following the rules. The one that never lost more than 20lbs said she never even felt restricted. They both live out of state. With my other sister, each time I would see her ahe was a little bigger.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
