Hi!

Okay, so I've survived one week. (no pb-I think that's the term used here- thus far, which I'm happy about). And although I'm sure this has been covered before, I was wondering exactly what I can have as I approach my 7th day since surgery aside from...

Clear broth

Tomato creamy Soup

Gatorade/diluted juices

sugar free juices/jellos/popsicles

Water

The first 3-4 days after surgery I barely had anything. I was in a lot of pain and couldn't handle much. Now that I'm doing better, I feel like I'm starving.

Of course, I'll resort to broth for dinner (with some mild spices to give it some flavor) if nothing else is allowed...but does anyone have any other ideas as to what's "allowed" during this precious liquid time of our lives?

I would love to hear your ideas. Thanks! =)

Caroline

Oh and p.s. -I've lost 12lbs since surgery 1 week ago. :whoo:

It depends on whether your doctor advised clear liquid or full liquids. If it is Clear Liquids only, you've pretty much got it covered. Full liquids is generally considered to be anything that would pass through a straw (but don't use a straw!), including protien shakes and blenderized Soup

Hi Caroline. I also lost 12 pounds in one week! I agree liquids are soooo hard. I will glad when this point is behind me! Just keep remembering it's only temporary and well worth it.

Thankfully, my doctor advised anything I can get through a straw. So, I went and bought a small strainer with a handle and I've been making cream of mushroom Soup, french onion, cream of chicken, cream of broccoli ( I usually buy the soup at hand) and then I just strain out the solids. Its actually been okay. I also bought yogurt smoothies from the dairy section premade only 90 calories for Breakfast. I know its rough but might as well try to make the best of it. Good luck!

Dumb question, my surgery was 1 week ago today & my doc. also said anything you can get thru a straw without using the straw. So does that mean you can have the noodles too just not the meat? Like what kind of Soups would ya'll suggest?

What kind of strainer did you get. All I have is those big ones that you do like your spaghetti in.

Shannon RT,

I had my surgery on Aug.8,2007. I got on the scales this morning & lost 10 lbs!! Course, we gotta know it's from all this liquids only thing we're doing, but it still feels good. But man am I hungry!!

Steer clear of noodles, rice, bread...all those things tend to swell once they get in you. I wouldn't mess with the noodles now.

I have drank the juices from canned veggies. Green bean juice/field pea juice. I know sounds appetizing doesn't it? However, it did put some flavor into the diet. OHH...one night I had 3 oz. of chicken broth and 1 oz. of green bean juice. Two course liquid meal! WOW

Pigs,

I put cream of potato Soup in the blender yesterday & today I strained cream of broccoli & cream of chicken. They were sooooooo feeling. & yes they will go thru a straw, I strained all the big pieces out. I did the potato soup in the blender cause it had bigger pieces. I'm assuming these are okay to eat. They tasted great & having no problems.

Yes, I haven't had cream de la potato but it is on my list! I mixed Cof Mushroom and Cof Celery together......yummy too!

Yeah, they fill ya up more too, huh? Since I've been having these Soups I feel like I'm gonna make it. I wasn't sure for awhile, I was soooooo hungry. What all has your doc. gave you as rules as to when you can do what as in moving around, etc?

I can walk on the treadmill 15-20, nothing to strenuous. That's about it! No water(bath/hot tub/swimming pool) for four weeks. You?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
