I am at the start of the process of going through the 6 months of nutrition classes for insurance approval. I have Anthem BCBS and my BMI is high enough but I was advised not to lose much weight because they said since I have zero health issues insurance could still deny me. Any insight on others journeys is appreciated. I'm regretting not starting this process earlier. I went through all the classes 5 years ago when my mother had gastric bypass.

Hi Hotkiss27,

I took a long time (years) to make the decision and I started the process back in December, My insurance has already approved me because of my co-morbidities but I want to have the surgery in the summer when I am off from work. I have gotten clearance from psych, pulmonologist and have cardiac tests and endoscopy scheduled. I also meet with a nutritionist once a month and have lost some weight already.

I am excited, nervous and wish it was June 29. At times I wish I did it earlier too but other times I remind myself it is all going to be good. Good luck on your journey and be kind to yourself.

I hope your surgery went well @@Reason to Believe. I have completed all the requirements I surgeon requires(ekg, sleep apnea test, upper scope) so now I have three weigh ins left before it can be submitted to surgery. My sister found out I was going through the process and decided she didn't want me to be smaller than her so she decided to do it and her surgery is next week. She's rushing into it because she flat out told me she refuses to let me weigh less than her. This process has been frustrating.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
