Hello all

My name is Ana, I am from Brazil, so please don't get upset with my English mistakes  . I have my surgery schedule to April 13 and I am still waiting for the insurance approval, but accordingly to my surgeon office it looks like it is ok. During my surgery I will also have my gallblader removed and a small hiatus hernia. Today I started my liquid pre-op diet and I am trying to get strong for what is coming up on the next 2 months or so. I can't think about anything else! I am worried and excited at the same time. A lot of "hopes" for the future, a lot of present anxiety. I like a lot the surgeon, but his support staff are not the best on dealing with information. They are doing their job, at the end things work out, but not good on letting me know what is going on. Maybe this is normal, maybe not. Oh well, this is all so new and so many questions pop in my mind everyday. How are you doing with the surgery right around the corner?

Hi Ana, I'm Marsha. My surgery is scheduled for April 18, just a few days after yours. I'm also waiting for insurance approval but my surgeons office says they work with my insurance a lot and all should be fine. How is the liquid diet so far? My surgeon doesn't require a certain diet prior to surgery anymore but thinking about doing it anyway since so many do. I'm getting super nervous and excited!

Hi Marsha

I am feeling weak right now, but I know that tomorrow will be better (at least I hope so, I have to work...). The liquid diet was a requirement for me, they said if I don't do it the surgery could be canceled. I think it is a good idea anyway, you should do at least 3 or 4 days prior your surgery. I am taking a Protein shake formulated by my doctor. When do you have your last visit with your doctor before the surgery? Mine was schedule for the day before the surgery. Two days before the sugery I will have a consultation with the nutricionist.

My surgery is on a Monday and I see the surgeon the Friday before, and also have to go to the hospital for my pre admission paperwork and whatever else is included in the pre admission process. I don't think I see the nutritionist again until post op.

I think the information about the after surgery diet should be provided a week before. I will be by myself during this process and I need to get ready with the food for the days after the surgery that I will not be able to do it, even if is only soup! Did you talk with your nutricionist about the after surgery diet?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
