Plantar Fasciitis

Recommended Posts

Has anyone dealt with plantar fasciitis? I've had it in my left foot for 2 weeks now, and I'm getting depressed. For the first time in my life I want to exercise, and I feel this is holding me back.

I have been bike riding and swimming to rest my foot, but i miss long walks with my husband and dogs.

I do wear proper shoes, and I've been stretching it as much as I can. It felt like it was getting better, but I played badminton with my son today and now it's super sore again....I'm so frustrated!!

So, I'm wondering...if you've had this problem, what did you do to help it feel better??

I had it in 2010. Things that helped: rolling a frozen water bottle under affected foot, rolling tennis ball, deep stretches that pull the fascia and not just muscles all the way up to my glutes, acupuncture. After 3 acupuncture treatments it was gone.

I am on crutches and fully weight bearing on the foot that had PF in 2010. The day I got crutches that foot flared. I put an athletic shoe on and only took it off when I slept. Did the stretches, frozen Water bottle and stayed off it as much as I could but had to walk at least every 2 hours. It resolved in about 4 days.

It sounds like the pounding from court action was too soon. Like you still have a lot of inflammation. I hope it resolves soon. It's so hard to back off the things we love. Let me know what works for you.

I had plantar fascitis in my left foot and got talked into surgery by a doctor at a foot and ankle clinic. It took a lonnnng time to heal.

I had it in my right foot several years later and was in a different state with a different doctor who was an orthopedist. He gave me a cortisone shot which was unpleasant for a few minutes but really helped.

That doctor also gave me jelly lift inserts for my heels and told me to only wear shoes that had a slight lift - enough to put the pressure on my toes and ball of my foot instead of heels. Within a couple of weeks the inflammation was gone and I have not had a problem with it in 15 years.

The most comfortable walking shoes I had were New Balance. Right now I have a new pair of Earth Spirit shoes that I got at Walmart, and I was surprised that they were so soft and cushy and easy to walk on. If I needed to, I could put jelly heels in there and be walking on clouds.

I've had it for over two years. Wearing a boot cast for 8 weeks is helpful and will reduce inflammation. I've had 3 cortisone shots and they really help. Physical therapy and stretching your calf muscles will help too. Therafit shoes are made for this condition and provide a lot of support. They are the only kind of shoes I can wear and still be able to walk in by 3pm.

Oh boy...now I'm scared I'm going to have this a long time!! Thanks for all your suggestions. I'll try the frozen Water bottle tonight. Maybe I do need to get new shoes?? I'll look into that this weekend.

I had it in my right foot along with a bone spur. At that time surgery was not done. I went to PT for stretching 3x/wk for a month.

One of the specialty doctors in our practice was an orthopod, so whenever I had a dog show coming up he would wrap my foot for me. OMG! I would have married that man (unfortunately we were both married)!!When he wrapped my foot, I had absolutely no pain.

It took 18months, but the pain finally did cease. I have had no reoccurrence since--10yrs.

I have heard that surgery is now being done again for plantar fasciitis.

Good luck. Feel better.

I've had it in both feet at different times, and was able to avoid surgery by doing LOTS of stretching at home and only wearing proper shoes all the time (even at home). It did take maybe 12 weeks or so to heal each foot and I looked like a goof wearing TEVA sandals all over the house, but it worked!

I had it in both feet before my VSG. We - my doctor and I - did all we could for about 6 months, but finally went with the cortisone injection in my heel. Immediately, I felt better and have no problems with it ever since.

I have had it chronically. Whenever I get a flare up I go to the doctor and get a series of 1-3 cortisone shots, this helps it to go away. The longer you wait and the more inflamed it gets the more painful the initial shot(s), and the more shots it seems to take to go away.

Mine are caused, in part, due to high arches. I have replaced all my shoes with new ones having high arches (sketchers have been great to my feet), and while I am in the house I wear the original crocs around all the time. Not glamorous, but effective. It's been many years since I've had a flare up after doing this.

I'm hoping the weight loss will help, and I won't have to go to such extreme measures to prevent it. Also be nice to have more options in shoes!

Have you seen a doctor?

Only a doctor, after a thorough exam, can tell you what will work specifically for you. Everyone is different, what works for one, may be harmful to another. I had plantar fasciitis, and know how painful it can be. That was 15 years ago, with no recurrence.

Oh I know all about plantar fasciitis!!!

Had it on both feet. Actually tore my ligament while having this. It takes about 6-12 months for it to go away. Went to see a foot doctor , tried meds, stretching. Nothing helped.

The only thing that helped were these flip flops. My feet are fine today but I put theses flip flops on every day still. Just love them. Read the reviews as it works wonders for people with the same condition.

It sucks, sucks and sucks.

Had it one two occasions.

Rest & stretching and most importantly....the right shoes and/or inserts.

A frozen 20 oz bottle of Water on the floor.....rolling your foot over it....really getting it into your arch......ah.....ahhhhhhhh. Sweet relief.

Go see your doctor immediately......there can be relief found.

I had it! Ugh--it was SO Painful and nobody (other than my dr) understood the pain I was in.

Basically, it is fallen arches. And it is worse in the morning because as we sleep, our foot is relaxed and the ligaments or whatever they are shrink up a bit.

I don't know which thing worked for me but here is what the dr prescribed for me:

Wear a "thing" on your foot that is made for this that keeps your foot flexed while you are sleeping. There are plastic boot type things or a little sock-like thing that has a velcro strap to keep your foot flexed. THat is cheaper and more comfy than the boots. THe boots also just keep your foot slightly flexed.

The frozen Water bottle--roll your foot over it.

Flex the bottom of your feet. Step on something like a step so that you can dip your heels and then up on your toes, then dip again (if that makes sense).

My fave--Move the Marble. have some marbles on the floor in a pile. Grab one at a time with your toes and move them to a new pile. WHen you have moved them all, start over and move them back. It's a workout for your feet. To me, for some reason, this seemed to be the best! lol

New Balance 800 series shoes were highly recommended.

Shoe inserts. My dr recommended and I still use in my sneakers, the shoe inserts to help the arch. This I also felt was very important. I didn't get customized ones that some people i know have done. Just the ones they had in their pharmacy. They are called "Powerstep" ProTech.

Best of luck. Let us know how you made out.

I had it for years and finally after two rounds of cortisone injections it went away.

It has been gone from my life since 2001 thank goodness because it can be so painful!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
