crazyplantlady 70 Posted April 2, 2016 (edited) Hello! Recently I have seen a lot of people saying chia seeds are a good way to get some Protein and a ton of Fiber in. I'm curious to try them, but I hesitate because chia seeds absorb Water, and become a gelatinous substance That intrigues me, but makes me nervous because I don't know if that would be bad for a bariatric patient. the nutrition info is " One ounce (about 2 tablespoons) contains 139 calories, 4 grams of Protein, 9 grams fat, 12 grams carbohydrates and 11 grams of Fiber, plus Vitamins and minerals." Is that too many carbs/calories? I feel like it might be fine if you presoak them? rather then eat them dry? Does anyone know? Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted April 2, 2016 This sounds like a great question for your NUT. I would certainly wait until you are cleared for seeds before trying them.
rnsamantha 352 Posted April 2, 2016 Although I am not a fan of them the dietitian for my surgeon said chia seeds are fine once you're 3 months out.
ange117 93 Posted April 2, 2016 I can't imagine ever eating chia seeds dry, tbh. They're small and too hard and get stuck in your teeth. I am a huge fan of chia seed pudding. You can Google a million recipes for this, but my favorite is chia seeds, unsweetened almond milk, a banana, and cinnamon to taste. I'll probably consider adding Protein powder to this after surgery! I also sometimes put them in a smoothie.
Ryan TN 348 Posted April 6, 2016 I just asked my NUT about this yesterday. This was her reply. I am 5 months post op. Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App
Ryan TN 348 Posted April 6, 2016 I don't think I could handle an ounce though. I put a teaspoon in my yogurt and let it sit for a few minutes, really good that way. Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App

4MRB4PHOTO 3,900 Posted April 6, 2016 If your doctor says no for right now, you can always buy a terra cotta statue and spread them on to grow as hair (Cha-Cha-Cha-Chia).
