So now that I've been graduated from the mostly liquids/soft foods diets, my bowel movements have been... less than satisfactory? In that when I'm done, it doesn't feel like I'm done. Some days it takes a couple of sittings, if you know what I mean.

I went through one period of Constipation, and I'm pretty sure I may have hurt myself relieving that.

I do get my 64 oz of liquids in daily, and 70-80 g of Protein.

I was wondering what kinds of dietary Fiber I could start taking? how much Fiber, what brand, etc.

Ideally I don't want to increase my liquid minimum, or dehydrate myself because of the supplements.

What are some side effects from taking fiber?

Some folks swear by Benefiber.

Others (including me -- if I can remember that long ago) have found Miralax helpful.

There's always plain old stool softeners.

Finally, I swear that the supplement that helped me the most was a really good probiotic. I like Spring Valley (10 billion active cultures), which is available at Walmart.

A probiotic is a good idea! I saw that the dosage suggestion was three pils before or after every meal. That's a lot! What did you do?

Well, Probiotics isn't about "a pill" -- because different brands have greatly varying numbers of cultures in them. I've taken probiotic pills that have 1 billion cultures, and some that have 30 billion cultures.

I currently take the one I listed in my earlier post. It's a single capsule, and I take it with Breakfast most days.

I'm betting others here know more about Probiotics than I do ... maybe someone else will pipe up here.

And, as always, Google will be your friend ... or confuse you. ;)

There shouldn't be side effects to fiber meds. In and out. Stuff miralax does not stay in your system in and out. I feel your pain as I can relate! Even taking stuff still having problems.

Some fiberful soft foods - prune juice with pulp, applesauce, peaches in juice or extra light Syrup, low sugar bran flakes with fat-free milk, Quaker instant oatmeal - "lower sugar" or "high fiber" varieties - the latter is also lower sugar. You can also add nice wild blueberries (from freezer section @ grocer) to either the bran flakes or oatmeal - they are a superfood and have Fiber too.

I eat lima Beans or black Beans almost daily. I also eat 1/3 of an apple or a small unsweetened applesauce.

I take a dulcolax stool softener, and once have needed miralax.

I had that problem as well. At my post op, I asked my surgeon and he said Miralx was good. I have been taking it for a week and I am now regulated. Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
