First time posting! Broth prep?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone. Do I start by introducing myself and my stats? I've been lurking and learning from you all for a little while now and feeling so excited for my journey!

Started the required 6 months of Options classes through Kaiser, and have 4 more classes to go. Wow.

I've been thinking about the double straining of Soup. Is anyone prepping meals and freezing them yet or anything? Or do you recommend doing that? My husband watches those zombie prepper shows sometimes, so maybe that is rubbing off on me, haha.

I just had some oral surgery, and I feel like it's showing me how it will be, drinking only broth and eating mushy foods. I can tell I will miss "chewing" greatly in those first few stages!!!!

So glad to be here. Glad I found this site!!

I don't know anything about double-straining Soup, but I did make batches of chicken broth, beef broth, and a pureed veggie soup that I froze in 1/2 cup portions using muffin tins.

I also made some food for Huz and froze it, since he isn't on full liquids and purees ;-)

I just buy my broth, beef, chicken and vegetable. I am fairly pleased with the taste. Sodium is always a concern, so if you go my route, read the nutritional info. Different products, have varying sodium levels. It's just easier keeping track that way. Good luck with your journey.

Sandy- I make "bone soup". Crazy name, but the idea is that you very slowly cook the crap out of bones lol. Seriously for like a day or two. Extracts anything and everything from the bones.

So you can do chicken, beef. Anything with a bone. You use quite a few of them. It turns out extremely dense with taste. Tons of minerals and nutrients from the marrow. Search bone Soup or bone broth. Good luck.

As an aside- I didn't prep too much for myself- some broths/ mushroom soup.

I did, however, cook an army's worth of meals for my hubby and three teens. Stock piled the freezer with almost a months worth. This was I could pop something into the oven without the need to actually cook. Or they could if I wasn't feeling well.

I made my own broth for awhile, but nowadays, I just buy wonton Soup broth and add nutritional yeast to it. It not only adds a "bready" full body flavor to broth, but adds an additional 7-8g of Protein per every 2Tbls serving.

Just do whatever feels "right" for you and your home life. You'll do just fine.

We'll keep the light on for you next to "The Losers' Bench".

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
