After an appointment today I stopped at Trader Joe's to pick up groceries.

One of the miracles of my surgery is that I can now do my own shopping. I had gotten so immobile pre-op that I had to have someone else buy my groceries.

Trader Joe's is so smart. They put their flowers and plants right by the front door. I bought with abandon: cut tulips, cut iris, a succulent, and a pot of hyacinths.

It occurred to me that pre-op, most of my cart would have been full of pre-packaged foods and starches. Today, it was full of flowers, fresh berries, yogurt, and other healthy, fresh whole foods.

One of my favorite poems:

How do you feed your soul at the grocery store?

Absolutely loved the poem.

The smell of hyacinths, however, gives my a Migraine.< /p>

But:

I loved the poem! :)

I can not go to trader joes without buying flowers. And I have more money to buy them with, not spending so much on food.< /p>

Trader Joe's is about 20 miles from my house, so we don't go every week. We go maybe every three months or so just because we can, and I cannot resist their selection of unsalted nuts - so I stock up. They are also the only place in this county where I can get Ezekiel bread or other other high quality whole grain products. I wish they were next door.

What an awesome post!! It is a victory when we can find pleasure and beauty in things other than food. Enjoy your beautiful flowers. I love hyacinths- they smell so sweet.

You are an absolute ripper ISG. Flowers are so delicate and beautiful, they take nothing and just give love, a bit like you ole girl.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
