One year after sleeve surgery can you eat a whole bagel with cream cheese?

I usually eat one meal a day. Then a yogurt at night. I was wondering if it's unusual to be able to fit a whole bagel with cream cheese a year after sleeve surgery. I'm hoping I haven't stretched out the new stomach too much.

Why are you only eating one meal a day? On what planet is that healthy? How do you get in all of your Protein?

I got my sleeve done over a year ago and he never told mr what to eat. Since I'm on the road most days I eat out a lot. Today chose a bagel inside scooped out and cream cheese . I've been stuffed all day and I'm done eating.

Other days I eat a lot if cottage when I'm home and yogurt. But most days I'm on the road, stoping at pleces to eat. I need ideas when I'm on the road. I am 1 year out of surgery, I got sleeved ,I lost 40 pounds rather quickly doing what I'm going. If I could lose and 20 pounds, I would have reached my healthy weight. I need suggestions! Help

I see that you are in NY. Me too. Maybe you just need a "sit down" and a "long visit". Where is NY are you? (no, I am not a stalker. I think you need a "talk'n to) :)

It sounds to me like you not only are off track, but really never got on track or even found the railroad station to begin with. You're mindset is confused and confusing.

I am almost 5yrs out and would be sick for days if I ate a whole bagel--if I could get it down, which I don't think I could/or want to. I could eat the whole thing if I took a whole day to eat it.

When on the road, why not a 1/2 chicken salad from Wendy's? It's wonderful. Or a piece of grilled KFC? Pick up a Quest bar if you're crunched for time. There are all kinds of available choices out there. You just need to think ahead.

You can do this. You know you can. You have either forgotten "the program" or never heard it to begin with. Why not stop by or call your bariatric team's office and pick up/have mailed their program/nutritional info? Get back on the team!

It's time to "come home".

I highly recommend you Google post op sleeve diet nutri to on and look for dr. Weiner. You seem to be woefully unprepared for effective sleeve life. Get a nutritionist if you do not have one that I nderstands wls. As a grab and go...look for boiled eggs, cheese stix, beef jerkey, nuts. When rest stopping.

@@Gail Ann Who preformed a gastric sleeve on you and gave you no nutritional guidelines? They need to be brought up on some malpractice charges or, at the very least, have their name spread around so other potential patients can be warned away.

Things to eat on the road:

  • Protein bar (make sure you get low carb/low sugar options)
  • turkey sticks or turkey Jerky
  • cheese sticks
  • nuts

If you have to do fast food:

  • Wendy's Chili
  • grilled chicken sandwich, but don't eat the bun
  • cold cuts from Subway or any other sub shop, again without the bun
  • chicken nuggets in a pinch, but its better to avoid breading on chicken

@ Gail Ann. Here are some things that I have eaten from fast food or on the go stuff:

Grilled chicken nuggets from chick fil a

Wendy's chili

Any sub sandwich- I just eat the insides, the meat and veggies

Any hamburger/cheeseburger- I just eat the meat and leave the bun uneaten. I have even gotten desperate and ate a McDonalds cheeseburger without the bun

Chinese food- I get shrimp and mixed veggies-no rice

Taco Bell- re fried Beans, the stuff from the inside of tacos or burritos no shell

Also, to keep in the car or a travel bag... Beef or turkey Jerky, Protein Bars, nuts.

Really the possibilities are out there, just get creative and focus on Protein. You can do it. There are a lot of us out there that didn't get a lot of guidance from our nutritionist and we are doing fine. Just try and educate yourself. I find that this website is a wealth of information and ideas.

Just try and make protein your focus. I do better with a few small meals. You want to get your protein in to be successful and healthy.

How about when we stop by the diner I usually get a cheese omelet. I eat half and take half home.

My problem is the guys I work with always want to stop by a bar and eat bar food, I never know what to order with them. I'm not crazy about meat in general, sometimes even chicken is too greasy. I never eat fries. See my delema.

Bar food:

  • chicken tenders with the breading peeled off
  • chili
  • nachos or taco salad and just don't eat the chips/shell
  • shrimp
  • sliders or a burger without the bun(s)

If you don't like meat, you are going to be hard pressed to find high Protein options at a bar unless they have a veggie burger available. You're going to have to rely on cheese/dairy, eggs, legumes (beans), and nuts for Protein. Unless you can bring protein supplements, like shakes or Protein Bars with you.

I am 2.5 years out and can eat 1/2 a bagel shop bagel, but I usually eat 1/4. Breads were a huge problem for me pre-op so I usually stay away from them. I'm not sure I could eat a whole one - and if I did, I can't believe I would feel good.

Try having 1/4 and adding an egg.

Uh ... reality check ....

I'm not the OP. And I'm not crazypants. And I'm not a troll. I'm 19.5 months post-op. I've lost 100 pounds and weigh 135 pounds and have been maintaining well for nearly a year.

And yes, I can eat a whole bagel with cream cheese. Maybe not a huge bagel, but a whole bagel. I've done it maybe three times while staying at a budget hotel where they serve continental Breakfast. And it doesn't trigger a carb-fest for me. And I haven't gained weight from it.

It's just calories, people. And carbs aren't poison for everyone. And when you're maintaining -- trying not to lose anymore -- it's just food.

And if you don't eat it 3 meals a day for a week, what's the big deal?

If you're still in the weight-losing phases, it's not the smartest thing to eat. But in maintenance ... chillax.

I haven't hit our local bagel shop yet, but I will. They make absolutely awesome Bagels - best I have ever had, and before my sleeve I could easily eat 3 bagels w/cream cheese when I got a bag to take home. I won't do that now, but eating 1 bagel isn't going to be the end of the world. You need to keep carbs low overall, but they aren't heroin.

I have had 1/4-bagel with cream cheese, and that was enough for me physically, and psychologically--especially when I consider the hi carbohydrate count in those things. Yikes. That's a day written off the plan, and two days trying to recover. Too many carbs and I start craving bad stuff, so... Can you? Maybe. But if you're worried that you're stretching stuff, don't even put that near your lips/hips. Step away, step away.

I am almost 16 months out. I occasionally eat bread or Bagels. The most of a bagel I can eat is half and usually give the last bite to my husband. As for bread. I can sometimes eat a whole piece but usually only half. But I rarely eat those type of things.

At eighteen months out I eat an English muffin every morning and have eaten bagel thins, I also eat rice and occasionally Pasta. My doctor gave me a limit of 120-140 grams of carbs a day. As long as I stay below that I'm fine.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
