I had sleeve surgery this past December and all in all its been a pretty smooth process. The one issue that started a couple weeks ago was acid reflux. I'm great during the day but find I am waking up in the middle of the night with the most awful burning in the back of my throat. I still take my daily omeprazole. I have now stopped eating 2-3 hours before bedtime to see if that will help. Spoke with medical office today and she said to try taking omeprazole before bed instead of in the morning so I will start that tonight. Anyone else?

I'm 19 months post-op and I am still taking omeprazole (20mg) twice a day. Once in the morning and once before bed. The few times I've tried to cut back, I was in the same situation as you... burning in the back of my throat.

I was on the omeprazole 20 in a.m. And 40 in p.m. And was still having issues at six months out. Dr switched me to Nexium 40 mg at night and problem was resolved. If taking it at night don't help you may need to change meds.

Thank you for taking the time to respond! I switched the omeprazole to evening a few days back. It helped but still awoke trying to choke on acid. Today I added ranitidine in the morning to morning omeprazole and will take both again tonight before bedtime. I'm desperate for a full night's sleep. No acid would be a bonus.

The dr office is giving me a few days to see how this goes. Next on the schedule is an upper GI if this goes t work.

Have a great evening!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
