Why is everything sweet?

Recommended Posts

I am 3 days post op and still having spasms/nausea moments when anything hits my stomach. I find it incredibly hard to believe that anyone could expect you to consume 64oz of liquid and 60gm of Protein in this tiny swollen sleeve. I am trying and getting nauseous with anything other than non-carbonted Hint Water (has zero everything). The sweetness of everything makes me ill just thinking about it. I tried some powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken broth in the hospital and just typing those words my stomach flipped a little. I was never a sweets person really, more a carb lover. Are there any Protein supplements, full liquid ideas that aren't sweet? Even the Vitamins and supplements are sweet and really hard to get down. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

That happened to me as well. I found an unflavored Protein powder and mixed it with unsweetened almond milk, a little splenda and some PB2 powder(powdered Peanut Butter with 85% of the carbs and fat removed.) It's only as sweet as you make it and helped me get my Protein in easier during the first few weeks. Hope this helps, hang in there it does get better.

That's why you just sip, sip, sip, all day long.

One ounce every 15 minutes you are awake is what you should be aiming for. You may not meet that the first few days, but you should be able to get there within the first week. It becomes significantly easier to get your fluids in once the swelling goes down, which for me was right around the 2 week mark. For full liquids I was allowed to have strained cream Soups, which aren't at all sweet. Just add some unflavored Protein Powder to them.

I was on Clear Liquids or nothing for much longer than most people, and good old Campbell's chicken broth was a lifesaver for me. Once I've been swallowing full liquids to purees, cottage cheese, pea Soup (no added chunks), and soft boiled eggs go down a treat.

Everything was sweet to me too, for me that went away about week 3 of post op. I was able to use the broth packets out of ramen noodles. The flavors are stronger and weren't as sweet add your unflavored Protein powder to them.

I'm exactly 7 days post op right now and had the same problem. Still having spasms and cramping but it's so much better when I use warm fluids. I haven't had a sweetness problem but I've been able to get 60+ oz Water and 60 gms Protein daily thanks to whey isolate (version that doesn't have fillers etc) so I mix 4 oz Water (warm) with 1.5 scoops 30 gms and can get it down within an hour.

When adding unflavored Protein powder to a Soup or pudding...Do you add it cold them heat?

You can add it before or after, but you don't want to let it get over 140F. Anything over that will denature the Protein and it gets clumpy and gross, so if you're using a pudding that needs to be boiled, add it once it cools. I just use instant sugar free pudding to avoid this. For Soups, I heat it first.

What kind of no filler Protein did you use? I have the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury unflavored tub and a scoop and half of that looks like it would just make a paste in 4oz of water. I did finally get 40gm of protein down over the course of a day via a Premiere Protein shake and an Oikos zero vanilla yogurt (15gm protein per cup!). Thanks again to everyone for their suggestions, I plan on trying them all seeing that my protein requirements for the next three days almost doubles per my post op diet plan.

The Greek yogurt is a lifesaver when trying to get in that last bit of Protein requirement. Dannon has one that is toasted coconut. Omg heaven. In trying to add hot Cereal I do 1/4 c of Cereal to 1/4 of yogurt and it's wonderful. Also- I purchased the Gerber baby cereal. Easier to make tiny portions with and no cooking involved. Just hot tap Water.

As an aside, a friend said she added non fat powdered milk to things when she could and it also ups the Protein levels.

I had surgery on Monday and I agree with everything here. Everything tastes so sweet it's hard to stomach the no calorie drinks. I've moved to chicken broth with flavorless Protein powder. But I was lactose intolerant before surgery so I needed to find a plant based Protein which I ordered online. I have yet to get down 64 oz of fluids or 60 g of protein. I'm surprised if I have gotten half of that in the past 3 days. I'm actually sitting in my doc office waiting to talk to the surgeon and see what he says. I'm pretty sure it's normal- slow and steady wins the race in this scenario. I'm just trying to not get frustrated and listen to what my body is telling me. Eventually I'll get there but I'm not forcing in liquids at the consequence of getting nauseous or ruining my sleeve. I'll keep you posted on what the doc says!!

My surgery was Monday as well and you and I are in the same boat! I will be anxiously awaiting to hear what your surgeon said. I am calling my surgeon's office today as well just to touch base and see if they can give any added advice. If they do I will share it as well.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
