twinhappy 79 Posted March 31, 2016 I am taking a 65 mg Iron supp on top of the Iron that is in my multi-Vitamin. This is due to a suggestion from my nutritionist. Even with taking a 20 billion probiotic I get constipated and have what I refer to as "sandpaper BM's". I know Water can help and I drink as much as I can. I also eat 3 prunes a day. I tried going off the iron for about 2 weeks but I started feeling light headed. Does anyone have a good iron supplement that doesn't constipate you? I have tried several stool softeners but every single one sends me running for the toilet for a couple hours.
Christinamo7 4,042 Posted March 31, 2016 for me it is Calcium supplements that constipate me. I eat 1/3 of an apple daily or no sugar apple sauce and I take dulcolax - 1 daily a second one at home if it has been 3 days with no bm.
breezy25 69 Posted March 31, 2016 Be careful with applesauce as its binding. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
AvaFern 3,516 Posted March 31, 2016 I use Feosol Bifera (the purple box version) and I don't have any problems with Constipation. I have a very easily irritated stomach and this is the only brand of Iron that doesn't make me nauseous. It's potentially the most expensive option for Iron, but I can take it without feeling any nausea and while I didn't know constipation is an issue, I've never had it with this supplement. Maybe the way that it is coated, which is designed to not upset your stomach, also helps in the lower GI department as well.
jane13 2,256 Posted March 31, 2016 @@twinhappy - I add 1/2 a capful of Miralax a couple of times a week to my food/drink to keep things moving. I was told that since my Multivitamin has Iron and I take it twice daily that it was enough for me. My BW was good back in January so I am hoping it stays that way. I am also at the age where I don't have a period and I was told that would possibly add to needing a bit more Iron.
