Pre Op testing before RNY

Recommended Posts

Hello, my surgery date is May 25, 2016 pending insurance approval. I was wondering what kind of testing is done during the pre op appointment? My surgeon says that I don't need to have an EKG or anything done so I'm curious what are other surgeons requirements. Thx in advance

Are you getting a revision? If not I am really surprised you aren't getting a full work up. Most of us have sleep apnea tests, vials and vials of blood taken, cardiologist clearance, psych clearance etc. this is major surgery and shouldn't be taken lightly.

At my pre op testing, all I had was a blood test, my weight taken, temp taken, and the world's shortest EKG. Literally he hooked it up and as soon as it started tracing on the paper it was over. That was it. I've been relatively healthy inspire of my weight, so he didn't feel any more tests were needed.

I know right! That was my theory also. I really thought that I should be doing more. I'm not a revision patient.

I too find it odd there isn't a full workup. How old are you and what is your BMI? Perhaps he considers you relatively healthy?

I'm 33 and my BMI is 45. I'm pre diabetic and insulin resistant. I've done a sleep study, psych exam, fitness evaluation and I will be seeing the nutritionist for the 6th time next week.

Hi Bella,

I'm also surprised you're not having more done but maybe it just comes down to a matter of preference for the surgeon or bariatric hospital? I too had a full work up: ekg, upper gi test, pulmonary function test, blood work, chest x ray etc. My surgery date is May 23! Let me know if you need anything or just want to chat

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
