Things you forget to ask....

Recommended Posts

I have my sleep study tonight and when they called to confirm I totally forgot to ask if I could wear my mouth guard that I wear to treat my TMJ disorder during the sleep study! I guess I'll just bring it with me and see what happens.

What oddball things do you wish you would have asked before procedures, etc?

I always asked, "why am having this test"? I wanted to know everything about everything. I refused to have any test just because,"it's routine".

For example: I was scheduled for a sleep study. I had NEVER had sleep apnea--ever. So, I discussed my concerns with my surgeon. I agreed to have a pulmonary function testing instead. Worked for me!

Sonogram of my heart? When I knew I had a cardiac abnormally since birth. I got my past reports from my cardiologist--no sonogram. Worked for me!!

I hate unnecessary testing--just to be able to check the "done" box. If there is a qualified need, then fine.

Maybe it would help you if you carried a pad and pen with you and whenever you think of a question , write it down. Then when you see your doctor next, whip out your list and ask away!

Unfortunately I had the pulmonary function test and passed it with flying colors but was still required to have the sleep study as well as it is a requirement for my insurance.

FYI - I did not get to sleep with my mouth guard, but I did bring it with me, because you never know!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
