Probiotics for post-op

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for May 10th for a VSG in Texas but I also suffer from IBS-C and use a coconut Water liquid probiotic to deal with it. It seems like A LOT of people have Constipation issues after surgery between no Fiber, pain meds, etc and I wondered if anyone knew if probiotic use was allowed shortly after surgery? I try to avoid medications if possible but am not particularly opposed if thats what needs to happen either.

I'm using the Probiotics regularly now so that when surgery happens all *that* is under control. Its only about a 1 ounce drink but its a little fizzy due to the natural fermentation of the bacteria. Should I go ahead and buy a costco size jar of stool softener or just keep using the probiotic?

Thanks!

You might want to ask your surgeon and mention the coconut Water base. My doctor has me on Probiotics for a month after surgery. I started a week after surgery and I am 2 weeks post op.

I take a probiotic pill, went back on it when I got home - but I do also use a stool softener. I was getting a lot of my Protein from cheese early on, now that I am eating more meat I may be able to discontinue the stool softener. However, I personally think everyone should be on a probiotic all the time, so I have no plans to discontinue that.

the fizzy you will need to ask the doctor about.

I was told by my nutritionist to start taking probiotics 7 days post-op when I was cleared to swallow pills.

Edit: The shakes my surgeon's office pushes also include probiotics and I was allowed to drink those 4 days post-op.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
