Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted March 30, 2016 I wasn't banded (I got the sleeve) but I was able to take my meds the day after surgery. Just talk to your surgeon about their guidelines.
jnt1 37 Posted April 5, 2016 Were you able to take any meds for anxiety/bipolar/depression/etc immediately after being banded?I was banded in 2008...took my small anti deps no probkems. Take them to hospital with you and they will administer to you as they should be.After years struggling with tge band im having a revision to bypass. If its possible fir you to go with sleeve instead i recommend it. Tge band is hughly fallinle and 80% of bands have to be removed within 10 years due to hiatus hernua, overworked esophagus, and weight gain. Mist banders will tell you it is the biggest medical con of the 20th century. Sorry for tge bad news but Re think if possible. Have a read of the posts under the forum heading "gastric band to bypass". It will give you a pretty realistic picture of the band. Dancing Fool 29 Posted April 5, 2016 Can you direct me to a source for the 80% figure? And to a source that shows "most banders" feel it is a con?
jnt1 37 Posted April 6, 2016 Can you direct me to a source for the 80% figure? And to a source that shows "most banders" feel it is a con?The 80% figure is based on a Swiss study in 2010, published in Lancet. I dont have the link anymore but you could probably google something like "gastric band failure rate"?If you go onto the forum section on Bariatricpal there is a section for "gastric band to bypass" you can read numerous threads from patients who have had the band and revising to bypass. I didnt want to believe it but sadly it is not a good procedure...most patients end up with hernias due to the pressure in the new small pouch...its just physics. The website of Dr Rutledge (USA surgeon) has a lot of info about band failures. He has researched it extensively and does 100's of revisions. jnt1 37 Posted April 6, 2016 Can you direct me to a source for the 80% figure? And to a source that shows "most banders" feel it is a con?HiOn BariatricPal if you go to 1. Forums. 2. Main Forum Bypass Surgery. 3. Gastric band to bypass revision. You can read dozens of accounts of peoples experiences with the band and how and why they're having it revised. I tried to copy some links for u but it doesnt work with this app. Good luck. Julie. Sent from my GT-I9505 using the BariatricPal App

Dancing Fool 29 Posted April 6, 2016 Of course the people who are posting in a "Gastric band to bypass revision" are people who had problems with the gastric band. That doesn't tell us anything about percentage of the total GB population who are/are not having problems. People who have no problems with their band are not going to see Dr. Rutledge complaining about their band, and probably are not posting in forums on revisions. The plural of "anecdote' is not "data".

The plural of "anecdote' is not "data". The Swiss study in the Lancet was done over 10 years...2000-2010. It is real data and certainly not anecdotal. Europe and Australia have been using the band for 16 years now. I merely referenced the forum for you to read some examples. As I have a PhD myself I certainly do know the difference between anecdote and data!! I personally lost 30 kgs with the band. Before the problems started. Many surgeons in Europe and Australia are no longer doing it due to the high number of complications associated. Good luck with your procedure. You will no doubt find plenty of research on that investigation and pending class action. http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/364311-Lap-Band-complications#entry4116620 Sent from my GT-I9505 using the BariatricPal App
jea(n__n)ette 98 Posted April 24, 2016 Were you able to take any meds for anxiety/bipolar/depression/etc immediately after being banded?I was able to take my medication crushed. Just make sure your med is not the extended release version. I had to get my doc to resubmit my script to the pharmacy and I now take it crushed and mixed with 2% chocolate milk and a bit of Stevia. It still tastes horrible but at least I'm getting the med I need. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G925A using the BariatricPal App
Cass87 1 Posted May 27, 2016 I take mine, no problem and I only had band placed 3 days ago. Take your meds to your surgeon and ask if you are unsure. You need to look after your mental health as well as your physical health. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Wvcari 84 Posted July 31, 2016 I took Zoloft before and after with no problem. If it's a big pill you may have to cut it in half.
