1st stage after surgery weight loss was?

Recommended Posts

I have a friend who vlogs does not do forums so asking and wondering myself now...everyones team of doctors etc has different ways of diet limitations... So the question came up...

#1 after surgery what was your food stage

#2 how long did it last

#3 how much weight did you lose in that stage only.

I hope this helps answer her question as well for others.

Clear liquids....day 1-3

Full Liquids...day 4-18

pureed food...day 19-28

Soft Food...day 29-42

Most anything after day 42 except nuts, seeds, skins and other crunchy stuff they wanted us to wait 3 months. The first couple months are about healing, not weight loss.

Weight loss....

Lost 22 pounds on 2 week preop.

11 days postop = no loss

6 weeks = down 17 pounds

13 weeks = down 25 pounds

....I didn't step on the scale very often (which is what I HIGHLY recommend because too many people get hung up on the stupid numbers).

But Not only did I lose over 100% of my excess weight, I am 27 months out and have kept it off.....and I don't even own a scale! Your rate of loss those first few months have nothing to do with your long term success, so that's why I say stay off the scale and concentrate on healthy eating and creating new habits and coping mechanisms. THOSE are your secret to success, not the numbers on the scale.

#1 Full liquids

# 2 Supposed to last 2 weeks, but I was having trouble with GERD, so mine lasted 6 weeks

# 3 I'd lost like 14 pounds in the first 2 weeks on full liquids

**Disclaimer**

Please keep in mind the less you weigh starting out, the less weight you will lose in the first weeks/months after surgery.

1 week Clear Liquids (with a couple of exceptions)

1 week full liquids

1 week soft

1 week soft mechanical

1 week solid

and so on

I don't remember how much I lost each week. I only weighed at doctors appointments.

Frankly, until you are regularly getting in all of your Protein and fluids, which should be your primary focus from day one, staying off of the scale is a good idea.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
