Golf and bicycling after sleeve...how long did it take you?

Recommended Posts

I am an avid golfer and bicyclist and was wondering how long it has taken people to not be completely exhausted or uncomfortable for exercising after surgery? Specifically if you are a golfer or cyclist, I'd love to hear your experience.

It depends on a lot of things. If you were very active before you will probably do better than most who were sedentary pre-op. I have a pretty physical job: walking, up and down flights of stairs, lifting, etc.

The heat in May 2015 was a lot for me the first week or two post-op. I was outside trying to do some really light yard work.

I was also still on full dose of BP meds and limited diet. Once I was able to eat/drink a bit more, things got easier. I would do a little and sit down, do a little more and sit. Husband and adult son were threatening to lock me inside the RV we were living in at the time. We were building a modular home and it was done two weeks after my surgery. I was bored to tears inside and yard work was picking up small scraps of paper, wood, trash the builders left in the yard.

When I was down about 20-25 post op (about a month) I realized my BP was dropping to 100/60. That dose was reduced to half and it made a BIG difference.

Meeting your Protein and hydration requirements is a big deal and it would be what I would recommend you really watch, even on a short ride or a few rounds of golf.

I saw my surgeon today for my 2-weeks post op visit and I asked about physical activity limits. She said, light walking on treadmill or elliptical - but no intense or extreme workout. She also said I could ride my bike, again nothing intensive. She said nothing else until after my 6-week checkup.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
