Northwestern Memorial - Chicago

Recommended Posts

Curious if anyone has chosen NW Memorial in Chicago for their bariatric surgery?

So far I'm impressed with the quality of the staff and the facilities, but I'm finding the sheer size of the program and the hospital a little overwhelming. I've completed my initial evals with the nurse practitioner and nutritionist. Tomorrow I'll receive the psych eval from a third party.

I was hoping each patient would have some type of case manager to help guide through the process, but it looks like that's unlikely. Does it get any easier to follow once all the evals are complete? Anything else I should know?

There are several people on thinner times that went through Northwestern. It is a really good program the best in Illinois, maybe tied with University of Chicago, but they make you jump through a bunch of hoops.

I thought about going there, but the length of time they make you wait before surgery and the number of appointments, conflicted too much with my work schedule. I didn't have that kind of time to waste.

I am planning to get surgery at Northwestern Memorial. It is a very structured program and can seem daunting at first. My insurance requires a 6 month diet and I finish the last appointment on May 12th. I think once you start you appointments it seems to progress pretty fast. Once you are done with the evals, you will start the Nutrition group classes.

Glad to find some others and best of luck to both of you. I attended my first nutritional class Monday and will have my first meeting with Dr. Nagle in a week and a half.

I also went to Dr Lutfi at St Joes and it was a wonderful experience!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
