Pain when drinking water

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I have a strange thing going on. When I drink Water I get a sharp pain in my stomach. It started about 2 weeks ago. I thought it was stomach acid, but I'm on acid meds and it makes no difference. Its not heartburn or acid reflux. No burning at all. Its a sharp pain that lasts for only a few seconds but comes on every 5-10 mins while I'm drinking water. I've tried crystal lite instead of water, still does it, I've tried several different types of water, still does it. Now I find myself afraid to drink water because I'm tired of the pain. I'm a month post-op. Anyone else experience this?

You should contact your surgeon. It's possible you have a stricture. Pain while drinking is common in the early days/weeks before the swelling goes down, but if you are having it at over a month out, there may be something else going on.

Following because I'm having the same issue. From some research I've done it's more them likely spasms. I've also read that is normal. But it hurts so bad so I've left a message with my surgeon. Hopefully I'll hear back soon.

Yeah, I had esophageal spasms in the first few weeks post-op. Just seems odd to have them last this long, or in the case of the OP, they didn't even start until she was 2 weeks post-op from the sound of it. If she's been having the pain for only the last two weeks and is a month out.

I wonder if other fluids cause the same pain? I also wonder if how quickly or slowly you drink makes a difference? Hope you both get answers soon.

I called my surgeons office....they don't know so they are going to ask my surgeon and get back to me.

Protein shakes don't cause it, food doesn't cause it, only Water. And I've tried at different temps, don't matter.

I do tend to drink really fast. I'll try to slow down and see if that helps.

Hot things like coffee and broth don't seem to cause it either.

Thank you AmyMarie for mentioning "spasm"....once I goggled that a thousand posts came up with the same issue. I feel much better knowing its common. Most everyone's response is that its normal and it'll go away. Whew! That's a relief. And compared to others sounds like I have a mild case of it.

@@amynova I had this too early on and was told to watch the temperature of my drinks, tepid or warm works best for me. After I figured that out I didn't have any more spams. :) I'm 9 months out now and cooler drinks now are ok, but I still make sure they're not super cold. Maybe try that!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
