Exhausted! 6 days post-op

Recommended Posts

Hi,I am 6 days post-op, still on clear liquid diet. Trying, trying to get 60g Protein each day, but getting more like 40 if I'm lucky. Pain is now very bearable even without meds. Was hoping to get back to work after my follow-up Tuesday, but, omg, I am just EXHAUSTED!!

Also, finding it hard to sip Water unless it's VERY icy and cold.

Anyone else feel like this?

Getting 40g of Protein at this stage is actually pretty good. You will get to 60g very soon. And yes the exhaustion is normal. I remember feeling very different at day 8 (no idea why) and then a bit of a relapse at week 3. Your body has been through major surgery / trauma. It will take a while. I took 2 1/2 weeks off and was exhausted the first week back. Take off more time if you can. If you can't, then maybe you can plan little breaks where you can take a 10 minute rest / power nap in your car? (This is what I had to do with some other prior surgeries.) Hang in there. It will get better!

I feel you OP. I had RNY March 22 and I need a nap everyday to function. Our bodies just went through a major surgery and we are still healing. Between healing and our diet being very low calorie right now, it's no wonder we're so tired!!

Totally agree with everyone! Daisee68, I took felt different at 8 days. Still tired but functional. I'm 16 days post op. If I take a mile walk I usually have to take a nap. I'm sure it's because our bodies are still adapting to the drastic decrease in calories + sx. I used to consume 2500 cal/day now I'm down to 500.

8 days post-op and actually feel so much better! Finding it easier to sip more Water finally and get min. 40g Protein really helps. My doctor is the best! Showed up for my follow up Tuesday and was greeted with a Protein shake, and when I left, they gave me one for the road. It really helped me feel less nauseous and tired :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
