Day 4 of 3 Week Liquid Diet

Recommended Posts

I am just finishing up day 4 of a very looooooong 3 week liquid diet of Optifast. I am finding it not too bad as far as not eating goes. I would say it is only mildly uncomfortable. I managed to sit through turkey dinner with my family, sipping my shake, with only mild jealousy. That being said, the last 2 days I have been having some unbelievable mood swings. Think a major case of PMS. I honestly don't know if my poor sweet husband will last those 3 weeks. To those who have been on the liquid diet, did you experience mood swings, and did they ever subside?

Why do you have to be on a 3 week liquid diet? This seems very extreme.

It's typical for the bariatric program at my hospital. They make you do anywhere between 1-4 weeks. Not sure what the deciding factor for how many weeks is though. Today being Easter has been the hardest day yet. My house smells amazing right now. I finally had to put my daughters Easter chocolate out of my site (and hers).

Wow! Four weeks still seems very extreme for your current weight. Yes, I experienced major mood swings by the 4th day as my body was in full ketosis, By day 7 I was miserable, not because I was hungry, but because I did not want to drink anythings anymore. Luckily, I only had a week of liquid, 12 hours of nothing and then surgery. After surgery the entire first week was the worst because I was not hungry at all Water was the hardest to get down and I did not feel like drinking because it made me nauseous.

I hear yah. Did you have any mood swings? Did they subside? Nice to know there are others out there going through the same length of liquid diet.

Good luck 3 weeks is long time-

I was just advised I will need 2 week Pre-Op diet due to revision and need to reduce liver as much as possible.

Luckily I like shakes (At least for now-That may change after 2 solid weeks of them), and I will be on diet from May 3 thru 3-17, so not during any major holiday.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
