Penicillin post 5 month post op-----ouch!

Recommended Posts

I'm 5 months post op and have strep throat. My primary Dr. Is out of town so the NP called in some penicillin for me...I thought I was going to die from the stomach cramping and the BMs that followed. So I didn't take them yesterday and now the pain in my throat is back.

I'm sitting here contemplating whether or not to try the penicillin again.

What would you do?

Call them back! They might be able to give you an injection of antibiotics instead, or your bariatric surgeon's office might be able to advise you on a way to help protect your stomach while you take them.

If you have strep throat and received a prescription for antibiotics, I think it would be very important to continue taking the antibiotics so that you don't develop an antibiotic resistant form of the strain. Consult the doctor about your adverse reaction to this particular antibiotic.

When you take an antibiotic, you not only kill off the bad bacteria but also the good bacteria in your gut. This can lead to diarrhea. It is very important once you finish your antibiotic treatment to restore the culture of good bacteria by taking Probiotics.

I would immediately call the doctor to get a different solution. I am allergic to many antibiotics penicillin included. Although penicillin causes a more severe reaction, erythromycin causes me to have the same symptoms you have indicated.

I would not take another dose until you talk to the doctor. There are many other antibiotics they can substitute that won't hurt your tummy.

Please do this quickly because until you get antibiotics going you are contagious and you will get sicker. Strep requires antibiotics, it will not go away on its own. I know this because my husband just had it and as a youngster I had it quite frequently.

Call the doctor or NP now & tell them what's happening. They can't help you if they don't know. ☺

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
