Hi I am having a sleeve done may 13. Im at a 31 bmi which I know is low but I have a family history of obesity and have gained 40 lbs in the last few years. I did alot of research and decided that I wasn't going to end up like my mother aunts and grandmother. dieting doesnt work. my mother is 100 lbs overwieght and has many comorbidities. I decided to do this preventively.I realize that may be unusual but my doctor said with my family history and recent gain it was my choice. He felt it wasn't crazy at all. Anyway, I have spent about two years thinking about this and made firm decision. That said if there are others out there doing this in may or anytime soon would love to hear from you.

I too want to prevent the inevitable! I am at 33 BMI and am working on getting the bone density test before I go back for next appointment. My insurance has approved me, but have not gotten approval from sugeon yet. Sure hope my BMI is such that they say "Yes". I certainly can't imagine the drive home (1.5hr) if they say my BMI is too low for the sleeve. Back to dieting (and failure) ?

I'm just starting my journey and have a lot of questions. How do some ins pay for WLS and some don't? If your plan says it doesn't cover it does anyone know if they ever will?

Also, my BMI is 31 and don't know anyone that has done WLS but I thought the band is better for someone that is just obese, not morbid? Like sleeve is better for morbid obese? I really don't know though.

Thanks for any help in advance!

My BMI is a bit over yours, and had a little dose of realty: They typically require a BMI of ~40, but if you have other health concerns, might approve you because of those. Depends on many things.

Hello all~

I am very new to this site, and I am not sure where it is most appropriate to post this, but I am wondering what was the determining factor for choosing the sleeve? I am really leaning towards the Band because I feel that if anything goes wrong, or if I have a strong aversion to it, it can be removed. Other options feel so permanent to me. When I went for the weight loss seminar they mentioned that they don't do many bands anymore, and this scares me. Can anyone provide any insight or guidance....

Greatly appreciated,

Nicole

Although my insurance with Aetna did cover WLS if certain parameters were met, when I decided to have my procedure my BMI was 34 and I had no comorbidities, my asthma didn't count. If it was 4 years ago, my BMI was 37 and my cholesterol and Hgba1c was borderline. I felt like a waited long enough and went ahead to have the procedure out of pocket.

What you choose is a combination of your preference and BMI. The gastric band is a medical device implanted into you and meant to be in there permanently. The stomach remains intact. If the band gets removed for any reason then you're doing to gain weight back, but if your body doesn't tolerate a foreign body then it can get removed. In gastric sleeve, a large part of your stomach will be physically removed and remaining stomach tissue gets stapled up. There's no way to get your original stomach back. On average people lose more weight on the sleeve. The band does have a high percentage of complications and up to half require adjustment surgery, such as for a band slippage or the port has flipped.

Im 32-33 BMI, as i am considering a sleeve syrgery, i am particularly intrested in hearing from those whom had it done with similar BMI.

Whats your experience been like?

Have you lost weight?

How have u found to maintain it off?

How much of your stomach was sleeved off?

How long did it take you to lose excess weight?

My consultant seems to think i would benifit from 65-70% of stomach removed. I want to be permanently free of gaining excess weight, yes i am committed to it in every way.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
