How much does self pay cost?

Recommended Posts

WLS is excluded on my insurance. For anyone that was self pay - how much did your surgery cost? And since I would be self pay - does that mean I could get in with a Dr and have the surgery quicker since I dont have to jump through a million other tests?

It varies widely. If you are going to have surgery in the US, it might be as little as $10,000 or as much as $30,000. If you need a hernia repair, some doctors can get your insurance to pay for part of the cost. If you are willing to travel within the US to Las Vegas or Texas, you might be able to find it a little cheaper.

If you go to Mexico, like I did and many other do, the price is between $3500 and $7000 depending on the surgeon.

I actually live in Texas. Just not even sure where to start. All I see is a million commercials on TV for clinics here. Its so overwhelming!

I paid $4800 in Mexico. I live in So Cal close to Mexico so I just drove; no major traveling expenses.

I'm actually from Texas and my INS doesn't cover either but they are going to cover part due to the hernia. I was quoted $7000 for the Gastric Sleeve. I don't have to jump through all the hoops but I still have to due some test due to the DR. I started the whole process on March 1st with consultation. I already had lab work and psych eval done now waiting for my EGD to be schedule then I will have my surgery date set.

Don't discount the hoops either. Being self pay, they'll definitely fast track you through the program if you want, and you could miss out on some things like the psych/counseling and learning about how to eat properly. I took about 3 months just on my own learning all I could about the after care and food and nutrition because I wanted this to be a long-term lifestyle change, not a quick fix.

The sleeve is a tool not a cure. If you don't use the "honeymoon" period to change your eating habits completely, you could easily regain all the weight after a year or two.

I was self pay and with a hernia repair it was around $13K total with all the hospital/anesthesiologist/radiologist extras (they say it's all included but then you'll get bills for the hospital copay, and the radiologist might not be included, and so on...).

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
