Hi everybody! I'm so glad I found this site. Let me introduce myself.

I am a 34-year-old divorced mom of an 11-year-old girl, 2 cats and a puppy. I have around 100 pounds to lose, give or take a few.

My surgery was almost a week ago, Monday July 30th. All went extremely well. Incisions are healing nicely, but it took about 4 days to get the anesthesia out of my system. I am apparently very sensitive to anesthesia. Spent 1 night in the hospital. Pain has been bearable, but liquid Hydrocodone tastes AWFUL!!! So I'm pretty much off meds now.

I wasn't going to weigh until I went back for my first post-op visit, but I broke down and weighed yesterday morning. I really felt like I needed some encouragement from seeing results. I was shocked...I had lost 11 pounds!!!

But I am REALLY struggling with the liquid diet. My dr. does 2 full weeks of liquids and then 2 weeks of pureed Protein before graduating to "real" food.< /p>

The list they gave me includes: Water, broth, sugar-free Jello, Protein shakes, juice (diluted 50:50), sugar-free popsicles, and any flavoring for water that is sugar and caffeine-free. Also, no carbonation.

I am allowed 60 grams of carbs and 30 grams of fat per day. I am required to consume 60 grams of protein and 64 ounces of Fluid per day. I started drinking Soup at Hands even though it's not on the list. I can't see that there should be a difference as long as I'm within my limits. No chunky stuff of course.

What suggestions and/or comments do you guys have?

Hi Shannon, I was banded 7/27. I am on the liquid diet for 4 weeks! I have been taking canned Soup and adding Water to thin... then blend, blend, blend. It is smooth and seems to do the trick. I also get yogurt. Good luck... This is a hard part.

Your diet sounds pretty much the way mine has.... for the liquid stage, I ate Dannon Light and Fit yogurt...cream Soups (lowfat) made with skim milk (for extra protein) and strained...I was banded on July 10th and am now on the mushy phase prior to real food on Thursday...

This is the hardest part...The mushy stage has been so much easier...you are done with liquids before you know it...promise!!!

feel good and hang in there..

I wish I could have yogurt. It's not till stage 2 (pureed). Not sure what the difference is between yogurt and sugar-free Jello. I may e-mail the dietician at my drs tomorrow and tell her how I'm struggling. She told us in pre-op diet class to let her know if we are having a hard time. I've already figured out I need my alloted amount of carbs. I get really shaky and yucky feeling like my blood sugar is low.

I don't have very much energy, but the hard part is knowing whether it's because of what I'm eating (or not eating) or just because I'm still recovering from surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
