Hello!

I'm 6 days post-op and I'm hungry.

I don't know if it's "head hunger" or the real deal.

Can someone help me to tell the difference?

It might also be acid. Are you on a PPI?

As for the difference between real hunger and head hunger, for me it was pretty easy to distinguish in the early days. I would see a food commercial on TV and think "I NEED THAT RIGHT NOW". That was clearly head hunger. There was no way my body was physically capable of ingesting that food without me ending up in the hospital, so I definitely didn't physically need that food. It was all mental.

Head hunger: I want something crunchy and salty. I want a cupcake. I want a hamburger. That fast food restaurant sign is making me "hungry." Watching people eat pizza is making me "hungry."

True hunger: I would love a plate of dry chicken breast and steamed broccoli, that would be incredibly satisfying and I would be really happy to eat it.

ETA: agree with above, you may want to get on a PPI if you aren't already, or see about adjusting your prescription if you are. There is a lot of acid floating around in your stomach immediately post-sleeve with no real food for it to work on, so that can trick your brain into thinking you are hungry.

The acid post op seems to be a huge issue for so many peopl. I am surprised at how few doctors seem to give anything for it or explain it to their patients.

Yeah I am glad my surgeon had me on omeprazole straight out of the gate. He has all of his patients on it for at least 2 months and then reevaluate staying on it. Unfortunately I'm still on it at 19 months post-op. Oh well, small price to pay.

Hi, guys!

Thank you so much for all your help.

I realize now it's head hunger. I've been on omeprazole since day 1, but it's so hard. I don't even want to eat a full pizza, I just wish I could eat bread and butter.

Today (day 7 post-op) I woke up really cranky and resentful.

Why did I let myself get this fat?

Why did I have to go through this?

Why is this happening to me?

This is not fair - blablabla.

I know it's self pity, but I still feel like slapping food out of other people's hands. I want to punch someone.

I have another week of liquids only diet to go.

After this I'll never have Soup again.

Once you get on soft foods, it gets better I promise. Not being able to chew anything is just horrible. Then you will have a different things to worry about. When you first start on soft foods it is can be really jarring after having liquids so long. Hang in there.

I would kill for mashed potatoes, but I know you're right.

I hope that from now on things get easier, first week was hellish with all the pain from gas and nausea.

At least I can have yogurt - ok, that's sad.

But enough with the pity party.

I'll try to be less grumpy.

Thanks, for everything.

Thank you, @

@@jstachic I had to learn the hard way about taking my pepcid early on. I never had any acid issues before surgery, so I thought I could skip it. Wrong. I didn't have to take it forever, just the first month or so. Its not worth it to miss it, The pain it awful.

I am on day 7. My days fluctuate. But I've decided I'm not going to go backwards I'm going forwards. COMMERCIALS are the worst lol. I feel you pain trust me. But I prep for the day. I first get my Protein shake. I sip on that for at least 30 min to an hour. After the hour I then began with my liquids. Such as Water or juice which is low in sugar. I sip on that once I've allowed 30 min to go by. Then I have my low fat Jello next. And I go back and forth through out the day. This keeps me from wanting to snack. As you know you can only consume but so much. I've even made my own broth from chicken bones and veggies. Great flavor and no salt. I also boil a Granny Smith apple with some cinnamon. Then mix it in the vita mix. Excellent substitute for a snack. Find what works for you but you have to keep trying. And if the urge gets really bad I take a walk

I'm currently cooking for my family Easter dinner and this is something new for me because I can't taste a thing. So I have to go by sight. So guys wish me luck for the holidays. Also they know they are to all eat together because I will be doing my three mile walk during that time. It's not easy but you it's well worth the small sacrifice

Thanks for the apple tip. I will try that. Cooling Easter dinner (marinated lamb on bbq, taboule, and chocolate pie) was actually very interesting. I did not even think about a bite when it would have driven me mad a few weeks ago. This sleeve is magical. And I lost 8 pounds in 4 days. On day 5. Getting all my Proteins and liquids without any issue. Still having a hard time with long walks but I am working on it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
