taramarie523 116 Posted March 25, 2016 As per my surgeon my insurance requires a pre-op class. This is different then the seminar it's done at the hospital I'm having the surgery at. Anyone do this? My surgery is being done in Hackensack NJ. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Bufflehead 6,358 Posted March 25, 2016 Yes, my surgeon requires a "pre op bootcamp" in the two weeks before surgery. We heard from the bariatric practice nurse, exercise physician, dietitian, and the nurse in charge of the bariatric surgery floor at the hospital. We had to take notes and participate in a group test on what we learned at the end of class. If I remember right it was about four hours, and then we all went and got our blood drawn for final labs after class.
heidikat72 935 Posted March 25, 2016 I would ask your surgeon or insurance company for details on what the class is. My surgeon's group has us take a nutrition class (in addition to the insurance required monthly appointments with a NUT). But that class isn't scheduled until AFTER everything gets submitted to insurance for approval. One thing I have noticed on the forum is that the requirements vary greatly from between both insurance policies and surgical groups.
taramarie523 116 Posted March 25, 2016 They signed me up for the class and said I had to take it. On the paper they call it "Pre-Operative Bariatric Education Class" it's an hour and a half long. there's also a fee for this class lol. There's a class after the surgery too but that's free. jane13 2,256 Posted March 25, 2016 I was required to do 3 pre-op classes (only done once per month) for BCBS Fed employees. They were nutrition classes for bariatric patients.
heidikat72 935 Posted March 25, 2016 there's a fee for my nutrition class. because the NUTs can't bill insurance companies (or at least most insurance companies won't pay for NUT appointments, even though they require medically supervised weight loss periods) so the fee they charge for this class actually covers all my appointments with the NUT and the class
taramarie523 116 Posted March 25, 2016 It's interesting how the insurance requirements and coverages vary. I also had to meet with the nutritionist that I had a co pay for. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
katanne 215 Posted March 25, 2016 (edited) I have to take a class after I get my surgery date - it's a pre-op nutrition class. This is in addition to the monthly visits during the 3-month supervised diet. It's my surgeon's requirement, not my insurance company's. kmorri 1,689 Posted March 25, 2016 Yes I have to take a 2 hour pre-op class and was told there is a $300 fee that is not covered by my insurance that I have to pay at the time of the class. I'm scheduled for 4/

I don't have a date yet but the told me to expect by the end of April as well. I'm so eager to get a date so I can make it real in my head and plan accordingly.
