Excessive Saliva Post Sleeve

Recommended Posts

I am almost 3 weeks post surgery and I have excessive saliva. It's really disgusting. I am not nauseous. It happens constantly, so I don't think it has to do with eating or drinking too fast. Does omeprazole help?

Omeprazole is a ppi. In general, using it to control acid early on is a good idea, would not hurt to try it. I took it for several months post op. I would not rule out eating yet. Irritating your esophagus by eating too much and/or too fast often causes excess saliva as food can back up into your throat.

If you aren't on a PPI, you should be. It could help and it will also protect your stomach from acid as it heals.

My NP suggested that all weight loss surgery patients take a PPI for 3 months post-surgery. I purchased some before surgery but I didn't take any because I incorrectly assumed that the pill was a huge horse pill. You can't crush them because they are extended release. I finally opened the bottle and the pill is actually fairly small, so I was able to swallow with no problem. I hope the PPI helps.

I'm having excessive salvia as well. I notice it happens when I gulp, swallow to fast, etc. I am taking stomach medications that are prescribed. Gas X may help you. It's my new friend!

It was about 6 months for me before it stopped. Gas X and papaya enzyme helped me get the gas and excessive saliva under control.

I think it does something do with the way you are either drinking or eating way too fast due to esophagus couldn't tolerate with excessive saliva that can irritate your throat when it backs up. So that means you needs to slow down and eat/chew pretty very slow then it will go away.

Excuse my ignorance but what is a PPI?

Proton Pump Inhibitor. It's a type of medication that reduces the creation of stomach acid. Many people who have gastric sleeve experience problems with excess acid like reflux and heart burn.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
