Severe cramps and numbness on leftside of body

Recommended Posts

My Mom had her band in February. 3 weeks ago she starting having severe cramps and numbness on the left side of her body. It is so bad she can hardly get out of bed. She went to the ER and they admitted her for 2 days. She has had MRI's, Cat scans. EKG's, Echo cardiograms and lots of bloodwork. So far no one knows what is wrong with her and it is getting worse. Could this be from her band? Has anyone had any of these symptons? She does everything by the book she is supposed to. Vitamins, Water and she is very careful with her food. Please let me know! I am very concerned for her!!!:help:

These are symptoms I have never heard associated with the band before. Has your Mom spoke with her banding Dr.?

If she is still having problems it sounds like it is time for a new Dr. or new hospital, maybe a teaching hospital, would give her some new insight.

Numbness is especially scary to me, I would be in constant touch with numerous Dr.'s, this does not sound like something to be messing around with!

Good Luck to you and your Mom!

Kat

She has an appointment tomorrow with him. She has two more tests this week also. I just want to rule out any band issues. Thank you!

Gina Marie,

I sent you a PM. I have numbness in my left thigh since 2 days after surgery.

I too ended up with some numbness following my hysterectomy---also in my left outer leg, between the knee, and thigh area. Numbness, and hypersensitivity to pain. It was determined to be nerve damage caused by positioning in what turned out to be a 7.5 hour surgery. That has been 5 years ago, and I have done the medication route, with neurontin, I have done the chiropractor, and physical therapy....all to no avail, the nerves have been damaged. My hysterectomy incision goes all the way from hip bone to hip bone down low, and they removed everything. My banding surgery took place much higher up, so I have no idea if the same nerve bundles would be encountered.

I am anxious to see what the Dr. has to say at this point! Keep us posted!

Kat

She went to her band doctor today and it is not from the band. She goes in for two more tests this week. It could be MS, symptons from a small stroke or even brain cancer. We will find out more next week.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
