Just approved for a gastric sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi! This is my first post. I'm a 32 year old female. I'm 5 10 and weight 292 lbs. I was just approved by my insurance today to have the gastric sleeve. My family is freaking out and telling me it's too dangerous but I've explained to them I've done the research and I've already made the decision. I am waiting on my psych evaluation and dietician meeting and I will be ready to get my surgery date. It's exciting to read everyone's stories on here and am looking for friends who understand.

@@excitedforweightloss - your story is not unique unfortunately. There are a lot of fears going into WLS and no one is immune.

Welcome to the family:D

WLS is actually pretty safe, as far as surgeries go. Especially if you factor in that most patients who have WLS are considered "higher risk" for surgery in general, since we're obese. The complication and mortality rate of VSG is lower than knee replacement. Would your family be discouraging you from having a knee replacement if you needed one because it's "too dangerous"? Of course not!

I'm glad you've put your foot down and told them you've made up your mind. This is a decision we ultimately have to make for ourselves with the help of our medical doctors. While I'm sure they are well-meaning, family and friends aren't medically qualified nor do they know what it's like to be YOU.

I understand my family was the same way about my surgery. But now they understand since I've had my surgery and I'm OK.

What was the pain like afterwards?

Some people have a little pain around their incision sites. Most of the post-op pain comes from gas. The gas pain usually lasts 3-5 days. Honestly, the pain is pretty minimal compared to other things I've experienced. There is a lot of "discomfort", but not really pain. I was only on pain meds the day of and day after surgery.

I am dealing with the frustration of having done all my pre-op appts but the office still hasn't submitted my case to insurance. Been waiting two weeks :(

Once they get approval, I'll meet my surgeon and surgery will be scheduled at that appt.

Congratulations on being approved. My family also wasn't too keen on me getting the surgery, but that is because they don't know enough about it. It is pretty safe and compared to the statistics of being obese and the comorbidities that go with it. You are much better with the odds of getting the surgery, than staying where you are or gaining additional pounds. The older you get the easier it is to gain and the harder it is to lose.

Congratulations! My surgery is 6-12 months away. I'm in Canada so our process is longer. My husband is against it too but I'm getting it no matter what. I've been thinking about it for 12 years. Time to just do it.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
