Nervous about surgery

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking about bariatric surgery for years. Last year, I had decided to pursue it in 2016, and about 2 weeks later we got our new insurance plan at work...and they added bariatric surgery coverage. I had to go to the ladies room to cry in private because I was so overwhelmed. I've struggled my entire adult life with obesity, and all I could think of for the last several years is how diabetes runs in my family, and I don't want to be another family statistic with a lost limb or blindness. I'm 3 months down out of the 4 months of weigh-ins/nutritional counseling. I have my psych eval done, and my surgical consult complete. I just need one more round of weigh-ins and then the surgeon's office will put in for approval. I have PCOS and hypothyroidism. I've been getting mixed results from friends, but most are very supportive. I've been nervous, occasionally thinking that maybe I shouldn't do this. Then I found out this weekend that I have a 1st cousin who is having his foot removed this week due to complications from diabetes...once the blood clot near his heart is resolved. He's only 10 years older than me. And because we don't really keep in touch, I had forgotten that his father had also died of diabetes complications. I had "conveniently" thought that my diabetes family history was all with the great aunts and uncles, all long gone. Not so. This bad news was a huge wake up call and I'm now even more convinced that I've made the right decision.

I've done a lot of thinking and a lot of research. I'm going to continue to read the forum and learn from others' experiences. But I'm now also choosing to turn my nervousness into excitement!

Wow. Powerful @mlbdl. Best of luck to you, and keep us posted. I'm 8 days post op RNY, please let me know if you have any questions about the procedure or my experience with it. Given the diabetes, are you planning on an RNY? Or even a DS?

Thank you, and best to you as well!

I fortunately don't have diabetes so I'm looking at this as preventative in addition to getting rid of the weight. I plan on having the sleeve based on my surgeon's recommendation.

I have been in the pre-op stage for 7 months and only 5 people know my kids my husband and my BFF. I mentioned it to a few family members and I got back was negative comments and I don't need that. This is something I am nervous about and excited about all at the same time and all I want is support and encouragement. This is a life changing decision and I'm glad I found this forum both for support and encouragement from people just like me going through this together. looking forward to starting friendships

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
