Hi im new to the site, i am currently saving up for the surgery but with the whole exercise thing i am not a big fan i am finding it really hard to motivate myself to do it can anyone give me some ideas or advice plz

Im not a big fan either, but since I had my op last year Ive lost over 84 pounds and the exercise is so much easier now. I walk my dog twice daily and just going up the hills is so much easier now Im not carrying a sack of potatoes on my back. Exercise helps to change your shape, Im even thinking about doing a 5k race!

Congrats on starting on the right track to a healthier lifestyle!!

I was NEVER a fan of exercise. In high school, I was the one who failed gym, basically because I either didn't go or was purposely unprepared.

About 6 months post op, I decided that I needed to add regular exercise. I went to a local gym, and requested that they give bariatric surgery patients a discount. They agreed that all bariatric patients would get the hospital employee rate.

Day one, I drag myself there, meet with someone to show me the ropes and set me up with a routine.

Day two, force myself to go to the gym and endure my workout.

Somewhere around day 3-5, I realized I was enjoying my workouts!! ENJOYING?? Seriously, ME??!! I would put on headphones and lip sync to my favorite music, probably looking like a crazy person but I was in a zone and having a great time!! Some days, I actually WANTED to go again! The energy it gave me throughout the day was awesome.

Those endorphins give you such a high and energize you, it's wonderful! Just start and once you get over the hump, you'll feel the difference.

What works for me is to set my alarm, put on workout clothes (cute workout clothes can motivate also), and just start, almost on autopilot. It helps if you tell yourself, I will do ________ at this time, this many times a week. Be VERY specific.

Find what works for you, something you enjoy and have fun with it.

You just have to find something you like to do. I like the pool so I swim and Water walk. I tell everyone I'm like a teabag. . . dip me in Water and I'm happy. I also like to dance so I purchased some Zumba tapes which I have yet to try. I tripped in a pothole in Puerto Rico and damaged my hip socket and have now developed arthritis in the hip which makes it hard to walk. Even the recumbent bike causes pain but I go slow. Some days however are a challenge. Even though I live in S Florida it has been too cold in the mornings lately to swim in the outdoor pool and I hate the indoor one so I'm down to 3-4 times a week instead of my previous 6 or 7. Just need to find the motivation.

@Kaite-grimmo93 - I was an active, but not consistent exerciser before my surgery. I think I am becoming a bit crazy now. Since my surgery I have lost almost 65 pounds and exercising is so much easier. I have tried during previous attempts to lose weight to complete the Couch to 5K training program, but always quit or was injured. I am now more than halfway through and still going strong. I am even approaching my high school (very slow) mile time! But since that was 26 years ago, I am doing a little jig about that. As others have said, find something you like to do. I used to think I needed to take classes to be motivated because I am rather social, but I am finding that I love putting on my headphones and running or jumping in the pool for a solo swim. As it is, as a kid I loved swimming and biking and now I like running so with that knowledge, I will soon start training for a super sprint (very short) triathlon in August. I find that having a training plan also keeps me more motivated.

@A New KK - I love the tea bag thing! I'm going to borrow that one.

We have similar goals. I am in the 4th week of the couch to 5k program and I just recently bought a road bike so I can do a triathlon late this summer. I highly recommend the couch to 5k app, very cool. It coaches you thru the whole process.

Ryan, That's awesome. I am in week 5. I love the C25K app. It is so much better than when I used to have to run on the treadmill so I could watch the time! As soon as I finish the C25K I will do the C210K alternating days with swimming and start my Triathlon Training Memorial Day. I am so pumped. Keep me posted on how you are doing.

Like everyone else is saying here it is all about finding something that you like to do so that you will keep it up. It is much easier when you have lost weight to get moving. I'm down 90 pounds and it is so much easier now. I love to do a class called body combat at my gym. (You can also subscribe to their streaming classes if you want to do them at home). It is by Les Mills. You just kick and punch the air for 50 minutes of high intensity cardio. I love it because it lets you take out some frustration on an imaginary opponent. If someone is driving you crazy, you just picture that person and beat the snot out of them. The time flies for me in that class.

Start with just walking. You will be surprised how quickly you can advance your speed and distance.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
