What is the difference between the RNY and gastric bypass?

Can someone explain the difference between the RNY and gastric bypass?

RNY stands for Roux-En-Y and is the most common type of gastric bypass surgery and describes something about how the intestines are rerouted. These 2 terms are used interchangeably though.

There are two types of Bypass surgery.

Roux en Y is tge older style and has 2 anastomoses (joins).

The othe bypass is called Omega Loop or mini bypass and has just 1 anastomosis.

Mini bypass is about 20 years old. It has less loss of nutrients and requires less supplements throughout lifetime.

Dont be fooled by "mini" as its still a full bypass. If you Google the mini bypass you will see the difference to RNY.

I am just about to have my gastric band revised to a mini bypass.

I believe the most well known surgeon in the USA is Dr Rutledge. He gas 100's of videos to watch about it.

Thank you for clarifying this. The question was comparing the gastric bypass to the Roux-En-Y, which I have heard and read people (including doctors) use interchangeably; not the mini-bypass.

My surgeon doesnt call it mini bypass...he just calls both 'bypass'...they are just different methods. As he says theres nothing "mini" about it.

There is a 3rd type of bypass as well....less common.
