looking for mentor in PA

Recommended Posts

hi all,

I'm about 5 weeks pre-op for gastric sleeve and am really looking for a mentor. This is a big step for me and I like to be as prepared as possible, since I'm sure nothing will prepare me for the real deal. I'm struggling with the program offered by the bariatric group doing my surgery--I really feel like there is not enough support offered. I've reached out on my own to a nutritionist and a therapist, but would like some practical help from someone who's been there.

Anyone out there who'd like to help?

Sheila

Hi, my name is Dave and I had my gastric bypass October 27th, 2015. I have lost 80 lbs total, 55 lbs since surgery. I am surprised that your program did not include a nutritionist, or indeed your insurance require it. I went through 4 weeks of nutrition classes, and also a lot of support from an MD with the program. Post support was a little thin, but adequate. What would you like to know? If I can help you I will. Dave

Hi Sheila, I'm in PA as well, closer to Harrisburg. I had gastric bypass February 15th, my insurance required me to see a nutrionist fir 6 months, which I'm grateful for because this is not only a physical life changer it's a mental life changer. Good for you for seeking out help on your own. I'm still navigating this entire process as well. If you want a friend, I'm here.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
