I finally met the surgeon.

Recommended Posts

So I went to the surgeon for the first time on March 16th, which was the consultation. He gave me the instructions to see the nutritionist, which I actually completed this morning via a phone call, then to have the psychological evaluation done, which I will have done Saturday.

My insurance company told me that my only requirements were those two mentioned above. But when I spoke with the surgeon he also told me that most insurance companies require that I get a letter from a PCP and meet with the surgeon 3 times after the consult.

I'm hoping since my insurance company didn't tell me that, that it doesn't apply. The surgeon office should be able to talk to me about what the found from speaking with my insurance company on April 20th, which is my next appointment with him.

I'm getting excited! With the requirements he gave me, I'm assuming that I may have a surgery date in July or August? I want it so much sooner!

Anybody with UHC have any words of encouragement, or anything?

I meet mine on April 18th. Insurance is so weird about things. I did have to get a letter from my PCP also. I think I must have 2 years of records showing obesity too. I am soooo ready for this. Went to a support group meeting on Monday. It was pretty cool.

Ifvyou don't mind me asking, who are you insured by?

So my mom, who also works with the same company that I do has a friend who is also starting her bariatric journey, and she said that she only had to meet with the surgeon once! That gives me hope that I can get in sooner! Maybe for my birthday in May? Ultimate birthday gift!

I have united health care insurance through my husbands work company. I am going to a seminar April 7th. The thing that sucks is i called united health care & they do not cover WLS :-( but im sorta confused (either that or im just slow). Insurance is so difficult to understand. Insurance said they dont cover any weightloss programs or surgeries but she said if i pay my deductible they will cover 80% and then i pay 20%. It sounds good i just hope i do not have to do a 6 month diet plan or whatever. I did ask the insurance lady if there was a criteria i had to meet before getting approved (example: 6month diet) & she told me no....so i guess we will see what happens.

That is interesting. I had to speak with Optum to see if it was covered. That is really strange. Insurance is confusing!

Update: I saw the surgeon again today. I mentioned to him my concern about having 3 consecutive weigh-in appointments, since my insurance policy does not have a specific amount of visits required. So he wants me to get the referral letter from the PCP, and our next appointment on May 25th, he will be submitting the paperwork to the insurance! I've got my fingers, toes and legs crossed! I want this so bad!

Also he got my results from the sleep study, and he sounded pretty positive that I have sleep Apnea. :( Blah. I go in May 3rd to talk with the sleep doctor to go over the results. Poo!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
