Joanne_Can 12 Posted March 20, 2016 Hi Everyone, I am at the point in my journey where I have to decide which surgery I want. I am leaning towards the sleeve but I know that my surgeon (I meet with him on April 28) is going to recommend the bypass, I have GERD. I was just wondering if anyone has done any foreign travel since they have had the bypass? Travelling is my passion and I travel to a lot of 3rd world countires where food choices might not be optimum and rice is usually a staple of my diet. I am worried I am going to spend my whole time travelling worrying about dumping when I may not be near a bathroom (as is often the case when I am on a tour). Can you please let me know how you made out? Thanks so much.
Imagine 1 63 Posted March 24, 2016 I also had acid reflux and I followed my surgeon's advice and had an RNY the end of June 2015. I haven't had one instance of heartburn since surgery! I was 9 months out when I left for an extended stay in central Mexico. I stayed with my family. No fancy resort. I supplemented my Protein with Protein powder from GNC.I ate real food. Nothing processed. I ate what they ate for the most part. Beans, fresh veggies and fruits, yogurt and probably a few too many tortillas. Other than that. It wasn't hard. I watched the carbs, made sure I had enough Proteins and drank plenty of bottled Water. I had a wonderful time. I made sure I took all my Vitamins and meds in their original bottles, and took them in clear plastic baggies in my carry on bag. I was in Mexico for a little over a month and will be going back soon. I lost 13 lbs. while I was there. I ate great healthy natural foods in small portions. I did a lot of walking and sightseeing too. I enjoyed it like I never could have when I was 120 pounds heavier. And when I got back home.. I was in one-der-land!! YAY!! jnt1 37 Posted March 25, 2016 Love your story Imagine 1! I travel a lot too and have been a bit concerned about travel after i have my 'mini bypass'. I gave had a babd fir 6 years which is about to be revised and it was far more scary travelling with a gastric band. I travelled with the special syringes in case i needed an emergency empty. The surgeon warned me tgat the increased pressure in the banded stomach when flying made it dangerous to fly with fill in place.
