Keto Chow -- Good for Post-Op liquid diet?

Recommended Posts

** I HAVE NOT BEEN SLEEVED YET ** I am just researching different types of Protein Shakes for post-op.

I was on a ketogenic diet which did wonders for me. I relied on Keto Chow as a meal substitute, and I can honestly report that nearly every flavor I tried was delicious. Just like melted milk shakes but the net carbs were under 4 grams per serving.

I still have two weeks worth of supply (they are a bit pricey--about $10 a day). Each shake has about 27 grams of Protein and is about 400 calories per shake. The only downside I see is that you have to MCT Oil and heavy cream to make it nutritional rounded: that is to say, consuming three shakes met all of your nutritional needs per day. I am not sure if the heavy cream (which adds fat--key to keto) would be a bad thing post-op.

Here's the nutritional label for the shakes: (hopefully linking is allowed)

Are these good to go?

I can't speak for everyone else, but for me 1,200 calories per day post op would have been too much.

In the beginning I ate 400-500 calories a day. At 4 months I'm at 600-800. We are warned not to drink our calories as it is a slippery slope. I wouldn't recommend doing drinks that calories dense. Right after surgery whatever works to get in fluids and Protein a little at a time is fine. After the first couple of weeks lower calorie would probably work better long term. You can try it and see how it works. We are all experimenting with what works for us individually.

For me, the calorie to protein ratio is really high. Premier Protein has the best ratio and tastes great. Even the GNC Lean 25 is better than 400 calories for 27 grams of protein. Definitely run this question by your NUT, but the this don't sound like a good idea to me.

I agree. Immediately post surgery I was consuming 600-800 calories a day. 400 calories a shake seems really high. I aimed (and still do) for 10 grams of Protein for every 100 calories as an acceptable ratio

I agree the calories, fat & carbs seem really high, most Dr's recommend 600-1000 calories max per day. Max Muscle, Premier Protein & muscle milk provide 30-40 grams of Protein with 3-9 grams of carbs and about 190-200 calories.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
