Dehydration=Hairloss

Recommended Posts

So I'm getting prepared for my surgery on April 6. It occurred to me that I've had surgeries and never have had hair loss... I've had extreme weight-loss in terms of dieting and never have experienced Hair loss so I'm starting to think that what causes the hair loss with the sleeve and the different gastric surgeries or as people calling on this forum capital W L S… Is the dehydration. It seems pretty consistent in the beginning that most people can't get enough Water. Does anyone else see this type of correlation? I'm trying to think of anything I can in terms of getting the odds on my side regarding hair loss. I just recovered over the last few years from a Hashimoto's diagnosis. Never truly a recovery however learning to live with it and work with it has been what I'm calling a recovery. This is a thyroid disease so my hair is already pretty thin and barely starting to come back. Anyhow I would like the thoughts and opinions of those of you out there who felt that they stayed really hydrated very very well and still had hair loss and for those of you who think that that can indeed see correlation that you've experienced

I think it's a combination of the anesthesia, shock/trauma of the surgery, and lack of Protein. Hair loss is just one reason to get your protein in as soon as possible. The sooner you can regularly reach your protein target, the better you will feel and the faster you will heal. Plus, it should help with the hair loss.

I'm actually inclined to think it's a lack of fat as well as Protein. That's just opinion, though - I have nothing to back it up with.

I'm voting "No" on dehydration as the cause of temporary hair loss (telogen effluvium).

I'm voting "Yes" on the contributors to temporary Hair loss cited by a gazillion medical authorities: acute injuries and illnesses, surgery, anesthesia, childbirth, medication changes, shortfalls in Protein and Iron, extreme weight loss, etc.

As VSGAnn said, google and read about telogen effluvium. If it's going to happen, it's going to happen and no amount of Fluid intake will stop it. I had hair loss from about month 3 to month 6. It stopped as quickly as it started and has now grown back.

      Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

      Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

      The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

        Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
