Hungry already! Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

There's a difference between a craving and actual hunger. Sounds to me more like what they call head hunger at this point because your stomach should still be honestly numb for a while yet from where the nerves were cut in surgery.

I felt hungry a few days after surgery--my stomach was growling & just felt empty. Sometimes even while I was drinking my Protein Shake & right after. I learned that a lot it was stomach acid getting adjusted to Prilosec & my new eating habits. It lasted a little while, but I'd just start walking through the house (figure 8's from one side to other side of house) & it always stopped then. Good luck! I'm 9 wks out & it gets easier!

I had a sleeve and was hungry for about a week - really hungry - doctor said I was working out the leftover hunger hormone, some head hunger and my body dealing with the stomach changes. now, a month out if I stretch my meals Snacks too far apart I do have hunger, but it does not feel the same as it did before surgery, I've had to get used to new body cues. When I get full my nose drips or I get burpy.

I am 7 days post op. I feel exactly like you. Even healthy foods I drool over. I think it is because we are on strict liquids. I am taking omeprazole. daily so I don't think it is acid. My stomach actually has hunger pains. Maybe if your stomach heals quickly it is ready for stage 2 foods sooner. But I definitely don't want to risk it! It sucks! I dream of cream of wheat and yogurt. Only 6 days away.

I had surgery on Monday and wasn't hungry for a few days. Now I'm craving certain foods like tuna, chicken, etc. I'm only on the liquid portion of my diet. Is this normal to crave foods so soon after surgery?

I had my surgery in monday also and feel the exact same way. It's driving me crazy. I have rumbling and I want to eat.

I feel so much better to know that I'm not the only one although I feel bad that all of you are going through the same thing. I caved and ate something small. It helped the gas I've been having in my chest though I don't advise doing the same thing. By something small I mean a couple tiny tiny bites.

The growling that people think in in their stomach after surgery is actually their intestines waking up and working post anesthesia. Most of the digestive noises people hear are intestines not stomach.

Head hunger is pretty real until you can start eating. Try to focus on other things.

Yes, same here. My surgery was on Friday 03/11, just a little over a week ago. By the following Tuesday 03/15 I was starving. It was awful! On Wednesday 03/16 my doctor allowed Protein Drinks and after starting the Protein the hunger feeling was gone.

As I was still on Clear Liquids I drank the Isopure pre-mixed Green Tea - has 40g of Protein in it. I highly recommend it.

I'm 4 days post op... no head hungry... no cravings or tummy pains.. just a bit thirsty. I heard all that tummy rumbling is normal.. I find it interesting because my tummy never did normal things before. I had Gerd and gastritis. So this is a change. And I love it!!! Also no BM either. Trying milk of magnesium again, tonight!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
