Hungry already! Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

Congratulations on your surgery. Sounds like you're doing awesome!

I'm trying to distinguish "head hunger" from actual hunger but tummy pains don't lie. I've lost 10.8 lbs since Tuesday and I think it's because I'm not taking in enough calories. My doc didn't give me a calorie goal just a Protein goal.

Your body doesn't adjust the acid production to your new stomach right away. If you aren't taking an anti acid, please ask your doctor for one. If you are on one ask for an increased dose. The nerves in your stomach aren't even reconnected for pain, that is excess acid.

BTW these are all things my nurse explained to me in the hospital. My nurse in addition to working with bariatric patients was 6 months post op.

I feel lucky that my surgeon isn't going to require a clear liquid diet afterwards. The first two weeks are "pourable, with no chunks". This can include pureed food, but I'll wait probably until the second week for that.

That's very interesting. I will try taking some Mylanta. Thanks a bunch for the info.

Please don't put potato chips in your newly minted stomach.

Try pepcid, but talk to your doctor, they can give you a script. A lot of people come home with one.

I had surgery 3/14 also, and I've been hungry every day. Very surprised.

I am 7 days post op. I feel exactly like you. Even healthy foods I drool over. I think it is because we are on strict liquids. I am taking omeprazole. daily so I don't think it is acid. My stomach actually has hunger pains. Maybe if your stomach heals quickly it is ready for stage 2 foods sooner. But I definitely don't want to risk it! It sucks! I dream of cream of wheat and yogurt. Only 6 days away.

I am 7 days post op and going through hunger pains also. I feel I can eat a lot but in reality I can't. I am on stage 2 and hopefully at my post op Dr visit I will move to pureed foods because this liquid diet is driving me nuts since I've been on it since beginning of march. I am also having regrets of doing the surgery. They say it's normal. Just have to deal with my mixed emotions in my head. I don't feel I've lost anything since surgery. Not sure if it's from everything being swollen and bloated.

Are you mentally or physically hungry?

Are you on a PPI? Are you taking an acid reducer?

Is your physical hunger below your breast or below your rib cage?

It's probably both mentally and physically I believe. Yes I am on prilosec since surgery.

If you were taking narcotics still after coming home, it makes it harder for your intestines to wake up. A lot of the grumbling and noises you hear are you intestines.

You really shouldn't be feeling physically hungry at this point, it is something to discuss with your Dr at your follow up appointments.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
