Struggling with losing weight prior to surgery

Recommended Posts

I am required to lose 20 pounds before surgery, I know that's not a lot but I'm really struggling with it. Anybody have any good tips on what they ate to lose their weight prior to surgery? I want this so badly and am having such a hard time :(

Do the pre-op diet. Here was mine:

1st Week:

All the Water, tea, and sugar free drinks you want.

All the broth you want

All the sugar free Jello and sugar free popsicles you want

Breakfast and lunch is a Protein shake

dinner is lean, unbreaded meat on a bed of greens

Week 2:

Same as week 1 except for dinner substitute another Protein Shake.

I lost 25 lbs during my pre-op diet but I know other people who lost more than me!

I'm struggling as well. My biggest thing is that I'm snacking too much. I want this procedure bad but I'm having second thoughts because I'm can't lose before

I was lucky my Dr gave me diet pills which I lost 40 lbs but I'm now at a stand still because the pills lose their effectiveness after awhile. Good news is my stomach shrunk so I eat less and I have my surgery April 25th. Good luck to you!

I am on Optifast for 3 weeks before surgery. 4-5 shakes per day only and 8 cups of Water including the water in the shakes and I'm allowed 2 cups of brocolli celery or lettuce per day if I need it and I'm 1 week and 2 days into the pre op diet and I'm down 20 lbs already it's a great diet and was hard at first but now not bad at all

I was really struggling with it too and then i realized how much I truly want this. So this is my daily food intake.

Breakfast - premier Protein shake

Snack- Dannon fit and light yogurt

Lunch- Premier Protein shake and a just for one serving of broccoli and cheese.

Dinner- chicken or lean meat with a small serving of fat free refried Beans and broccoli.

The premier Protein shakes are amazingly cheap and don't taste awful. I got a 12 pack at SAMs for 14.00

And the Dannon light and fit yogurts are so good and have lots of Protein. My favorites are banana cream, salted caramel and key lime

Do this and I PROMISE you will lose.

Drink tons of Water as well!

HI there - I also was really having a struggle getting the 25 lbs off that I was asked to prior to my surgery (which is now coming up on May 16). I started seeing my surgeon in Sept. of 2015 and the most I got off between then and Feb 1st was about 3-4 lbs. I wasn't motivated to exercise, I flip-flopped from Paelo to Mediterranean diets, etc. Finally, my sister and I did what was always have (and it's great to have a support partner if you can get one!) - we went back to our old fall-back program, good ol' Weightwatchers. I always forget how easy this pgm is because it is more of a Portion Control program than a denial pgm (i.e. like on Paleo low to no carbs, sugar and same on Med diet). Between Feb. 1st and today, April 7th I have lost 22 lbs and am now not only over what the doc wanted me to lose, but am shooting for another 10 lbs off before surgery! Someone else listed this above, but the Premier Protein shakes (my fave is the chocolate - really delicious and 30 g of Protein and only 1 g of sugar and only 2 WW points!) are wonderful. The 18 pack is available at costco for about $25 and it's a legit Meal Replacement.

I am just doing the on-line WW version - very simple, user friendly and about 20 bucks a month. For the money, it's well worth it if you are struggling with pre-op weight loss - it really teaches you portion control which we all have to learn anyway, right? Good luck - I hope this helps and keep in touch with how you are doing. You can do it!! :)

On New Year's, I promised myself I would do better. I started by walking 4 blocks to my kids school and walking back. Not much, but with arthritis it's been a struggle. I work from home in the guest bedroom upstairs. I keep all food down stairs and make myself have to go up and down the stairs for food. But I keep a pitcher of Water at my desk. I then started eating like my kids. My kids are extremely lean and muscular and only eat seafood, fruits and veggies. I stopped skipping breakfast and at least do a Protein shake in the morning. My NUT is training me to eat Protein first. Take my time eating. I drink a ton of Water. I'm going to start swimming soon. Since 1/1/16. I have lost 27lbs and 4.5 inches off my waist. I was getting discouraged because I stalled for 2 weeks and I almost turned to food because I was upset. But then my hubby had me take a progress pic and I really got motivated. A few days later the scale moved down another pound. Start with spost-288344-14601648817213_thumb.jpgmall goals.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
