I am currently being worked up for the sleeve surgery. It will probably be around August before I will have surgery. I currently have long fairly fine hair. I am terrified of Hair loss. I let my surgeon know this and his office sent me a protocol of a list of about 7 different Vitamins to start on now. My question is did any of you take them several months prior to surgery and did it help? Also any Boise sleevers having surgery this July or August? Thanks for any help with this.

I did start taking a Vitamin regimen several months before surgery. I am almost six months out and while I have had some extra shedding it hasn't been severe thank God.

I suggest Biotin as soon as you can. I started Vitamin D, multi Vitamin, Calcium citrate, Iron, and B12 several months prior to surgery. However I did not start Biotin until a few weeks after surgery and I experienced thinning hair. It has stopped thinning now, I am 7 months post...it actually stopped at month 5.

I only started all bariatric Vitamins one month prior to surgery. I am losing hair.

If you love your skin, don't try Biotin, it won't stop your hair from shedding and it makes a lot of people break out. It isn't worth the risk, imo.

The best thing you can do is create and environment that promotes fast regrowth. If your hair is going to fall out, nothing will stop it. a high quality hair Vitamin like, Phyto. collagen supplements, and exceeding your Protein goals helps. Hair is Protein. When I wanted to make my hair grow fast prior to surgery I always increased my protein.

You are going to lose or not. Nothing you can do to stop it. It's just your body's way of dealing with the stress of surgery. All the supplements, special products, etc can help with regrowth, but won't stop the hair loss itself.

That being said, I have very fine thin hair and any loss would have been noticeable. I planned on shaving my head and wearing hats. I didn't take Biotin or use special shampoos, and guess what.....I never lost a single strand of hair. In fact, it's thicker and longer now than it's ever been.

The only thing I did do was take my whole food based Vitamins (not chemically synthesized ones), always met or exceeded Protein and Water goals, and I didn't fret over all the little things like preop and postop diets, stalls and Hair loss. Remember, mental stress is just as hard on a body as physical stress.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
