Surgeon Requirements

Recommended Posts

Just got back from my weight loss seminar and signed up to get an appt. They are calling me tomorrow to set up a day. According to the surgeon (if I understood him correctly) since I will be self-pay I only have one 4 hour appt in which they run all the tests needed and then if all looks good we will set an appt to schedule surgery. So no sleep apnea test required.

Ouch! Do you know how much of that charge you will pay out of pocket PaulDaniel? After further reading, the booklet they sent home with me from the seminar, is saying there is a small possibility I may be tested for this still.

2goldengirl, how much did it cost you and did you also have to buy a machine?

The sleep study didn't cost me anything, it was completely covered by insurance. I have a 20% copay for DME, so the copay for the machine and supplies ran about $80 for the first three months.

@Imwilla,

Some surgeons require a nutritionist and supervised diet, others don’t. Some health insurance plans require it, some don’t. It’s not a red flag or anything if you don’t have that as a requirement for reimbursement. You can always ask for a longer term pre-op plan as a substitute for a supervised diet if you want to test yourself and make sure you’ll do okay post-op. Good luck!

My hubby and I are going through this together. mine is covered and I am required to do the six monthly visits, three exercise visits, one psych evaluation, sleep study, letter from my primary care, nutritional visits till I'm cleared by the NUT, watch educational video series online, seminar, surgery class, meet with surgeon, and lose a certain amount of weight. Hubby is self pay and he has to do three exercise, psych evaluation, nutrition visits till cleared, same videos, same surgery class, meet with surgeon and lose weight. No six month visits, otherwise close to the same. And we can't do stuff together, they require our own appointments.

We are going to appeal his insurance so his stuff may change. Hoping to get sleeved in September, start my new life!

      Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
      What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
