I have a date! I will have surgery 9/17. My pre-op appt is 9/4. I will have a 2 week pre op diet that is BariatriX drinks, I will know more details after pre-op. I am soooo excited. I never thought I would get approved and I was pretty pessimistic about it. Im sure I will have tons of questions. My main one is this:

I am o 2nd semester nursing student. I have a week break the end of Aug and I was hoping to have surgery then but they couldnt get me in at that time. So now I will be having surgery on a Manday (the 17th) and I will be going back to school clinicals on Thursday. I can sit/mope around that day and the next and then Id be off for the weekend. Do you all think Im nuts? Is it unreasonable to think that I will be feeling ok enough to be hanging out in a hopspital (not where I had surgery of course) 3 days later? I either have to do it then or wait until I finish school in December and I REALLY cant wait! LOL

Hey I was kinda in the same situation. I am in Radiology school so I had to go to my clinicals 4 days after surgery on a Monday. It was rough but I made it thru the whole day. Though Tuesday the techs sent me home cuz they said I looked so miserable. they gave me 2 days off and I went back fine on Thursday. You will be tired but probably be able to make it!

Wow, i am excited for you, the only thing I worry about is that, are they going to expect you to be able to help transfer patients or lift them, or anything of that sort. Nurses do work hard, and if they aren't aware of your situation, and you don't want to tell them, it could be a problem. I hope all works out well for you, good luck !!!

Yeah...I agree with kaohinani's concerns. My daughter is in Nursing school and will start clinical Sept 2008. She's already been advised that it is VERY demanding physically. She has JRA (Juevenile Rhumatoid Arthritis) so she'll be giving documentation to her school, from her specialist, regarding her special needs. Perhaps you should talk to your guidance counselor and ask what, if anything, you need to do or documentation you'll need to provide, to get an easier work load for 6 weeks. You're not allowed to lift more than 10 pounds at first.

Congrats on your date! We'll be anxious to hear how you are doing.

As far as going back to work, I was banded on a Monday and went back on Thursday. I was tired but fine--I do have a desk job. I was glad to see the weekend come but it all worked out just fine. Also, the day after I was banded my 80-year-old father was diagnosed with colon cancer and I was driving 40 miles each way to see him the day after surgery and every day except the days I worked. I remember sitting down by his hospital bed VERY carefully that first day and my mother and sister asking me if I "hurt my back or something." I told them I had had surgery to repair a hiatal hernia but that I was fine. Seemed to work and everyday I got stronger. I hope it works out for you as well. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I dont want to tell my teachers/classmates becuse I dont want them keeping an eye on me because I am not really supposed to have any restrictions or they could kick me out. There are 2 girlfriends in my clas that know and they would help w/ anytransfers or anything but because we will be 3rd semester, we will be doing less patient care and focusing more on paperwork and IVs and such..I dont think there will be anything strenuous that month really but I do have help if I need it.

Being in Radiology we have to move a lot of patients around and lift them etc. I told my instructor that I had surgery not what kind though. It is no ones business if I dont want to tell them. And when they asked what kind i just said "just surgery" they got the hint and said "say no more" . I dont see how they could kick u out of the program, I mean what if you had to have emergency surgery of some sort? Anyway, good luck!!! :)

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
