Hello all,

I am a newbie to the forum so I apologize if this is already answered elsewhere.

How did you all go about getting surgeon stats (Number of sleeve's performed, complication rates, etc.) before picking a program? This whole process seems backwards to me in that all of the hospitals I have talked with seem to require multiple appointments for behavioral assessments/ nutritionists, or committing to a fill day new patient orientation, before I would be able to speak with a surgeon or get their stats. This seems like a extremely inefficient way to decide who I'd like to pick as my surgeon.

Did anyone have any success navigating this process?

Many thanks,

Amber

I have to use Kaiser. The surgeon had a Web page with most of that info. I tried doing a review of a few places on yelp or whatever on google. Wasn't very helpful.

I set up an initial consultation with the surgeon that was recommended to me and asked him for stats when we met.

That makes sense and that is how I was expecting the process to go!

I was told that I can't meet with the surgeon until I complete a number of other appointments (behavioral health screening, nutritionist, and orientation). Is this a red flag? I've seen a number of other people from this forum use the same program and surgeons so I assumed this was just the normal sequence of events!

@@BigInBoston not necessarily a red flag at all. I would ask the office manager or patient advocate for stats -- maybe call in advance and just let them know this is something you are interested in. If they can't or won't provide stats, that would be a red flag to me. Now, they may not be able to rattle them off right when you call, but they should be able to tell you something like, "let me get those numbers together and call you back in a couple of days."

My surgeon was at the info session/orientation and gave his stats as part of his presentation. You can always ask at the orientation and/or the individual consult. They are very used to this question.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
