I've had 2 Mirenas, one before kids and 1 after. The 1 after was much less painful. The one before hurt, like severe cramping, while they inserted it and I was a little sore for an hour or so after. I would have been able to go out that evening though. I did bleed pretty heavily for almost a month after the first one.

I briefly had the Mirena IUD about 8 years ago, when I was in my mid-20s. I've never had kids, and I also have a crazy-sensitive vagus nerve. The insertion was painful and crampy, but I also had a vaso-vagal reaction and nearly blacked out before barfing all over the doctor's office. I had cramping, bleeding, and I generally felt like crap for the next couple months. I went back to my gynecologist to have it removed, only to find they my body was already attempting to expel it, and it was partially out of my uterus.

I know other people who love theirs, and I think they are a great option, but it just wasn't the right option for me. My body did. not. want. it. in. there.

I have a mirena. I'm on my second one actually since I had the first one put in a little over five years ago. You'll get some cramping but nothing that is unbearable. I love my mirena, wouldn't go back to anything else.

I'm tired of the side effects of the pill, and I'm horrible at keeping up with it every day. So, I opted for the IUD. Sleeve surgery was the deciding factor for me.

34, never had kids, and I have a tiny cervix. I'm pretty certain I'll be miserable after insertion.

Do you track your cycles? If so, you should reschedule during ovulation (if possible). The cervix is slightly dilated already and will be resting lower in your vagina so it's easier to reach.

How much pain you'll experience also depends on how sensitive your cervix is.

Try not to worry yourself too much. I had a procedure called an HSG which is basically an x-ray to see if the fallopian tubes are open and I did some research beforehand. A lot of people said it was horribly painful and one said she screamed so much she scared the women in the waiting room. I worked myself up into a frenzy and had a panic attack. Didn't help that they strapped my legs down with these large, padded Velcro strips.

Turned out to be okay because while it was uncomfortable it didn't hurt too much. Everyone's experiences will be different. I do recommend taking 2 Tylenol beforehand. I was told no NAISDs too when I had my HSG but I was allowed to have 2 Tylenol.

The pain is going to depend on a few factors, including the skill of the doctor.

I have a copper IUD I had several years before surgery.

My pain was basically non existent. Cramped a little like a period. The first 6 months I spotted a lot, but I didn't have constant periods. After 6 months totally normal.

No idea about hormonal one, I got an IUD to avoid hormones.

The peace of mind is worth it. I love it 2nd only to my sleeve.

So coming from an old woman that had ran the gauntlet when it comes to BC .... Lets see.... First of all i got pregnant the first time at the age of 16 and im 47 now... so oblivious.. i have had many years to do some trial and error....

First was the pill... ONova 150ies... for those young woman, these were the best but were taken off the market. So the dr tried me on many diff strengths....all had issues. Plus im terrible at remembering. Then at 18 i got divorced and opted to do Condoms. this worked... no unwanted kids and no STD's win win. Then i met my husband and we dated for a few years and decided we were going to get married and stopped the condoms.... BAM. Jason... After Jason, i gave pill another try.. nope, so then came the Diaphragm... Oh Holy hell... anyone who has used them will tell you... the UTI's because you have to leave it in place for a while after sex... NOT GOOD. Then came the Depo shots.... I gained 50lbs in Three months on them and said... oh hell no.....

THEN cam the IUD... I liked the IUD. Mine was inserted during my cycle and i thought the insertion was Not terrible. I had cramps worse then that... But i do have a high tolerance for pain. My issue was the heavy bleeding... it was bad... not going to lie. Then upon an ultra sound my GYN discovered that my IUD was implanted (not by her) wrong and i could have gotten preg at anytime.... OMG... Thank you Lord for knowing that giving me another kid would not have been good..... So then we did the Nuvaring, I don't care what anyone says. This one, for me, worked the best, this was the lesser of all the Evils..... I didn't have to remember to take a pill, didn't have to hope it didn't break, NO Uti's, No weight gain. I could control when my cycle started.... During sex (how little there was) i would remove and then reinsert after. The Bleeding still happened, as i had always been a 7 full day heavy bleeder.... But it worked. and after a few years on that we, my dr. and i decided on a partial Hysterectomy... Due to the bleeding. So i still have my ovaries .... Just no more babies... no bleeding.... Can you say HEAVEN.... Truth is i didn't know what kind of pain i was putting up with until the pain was gone. Now im home free..... yes LORD and thank you Jesus... Free at last free at last, thank God oh mighty im free.... at last...

I do not track my cycles - given that my Drs are not certain if I've ever actually ovulated in my life, there didn't seem to be much point. I've run the gynecological gambit: paps, HSGs, polyp removals, D&Cs, a cervical biopsy, an endometrial biopsy, countless transvaginal ultrasounds...and what I've learned is that my pain tolerance ends where my cervix begins. Im certainly not expecting the IUD insertion to be a walk in the park, but I know it will be worth the trouble once everything settles down.

I could never control when my cycle started with the NuvaRing. I tried a couple times, but I would just get breakthrough bleeding after a few days that would last until I took the ring out. Not fun. And remind me to book a follow up ultrasound to check that it's placed right. I am entirely uninterested in a membership to the 'pregnant on IUD' club. Lol

So I did reschedule for 2 weeks from tomorrow. I also asked about a prescription sedative to relax me, but the Dr called me back and wanted me to just take something OTC, so I wasn't happy about that. [emoji35]

The first time my male OB inserted the Mirena, and it caused some cramping. I didn't enjoy the process, but I was fine once it was inserted. 5 years later, my new and improved female OB replaced it and POOF! She was so fast! It was amazing! You can survive this.

But if your doctor isn't taking your anxiety and request for a sedative seriously, maybe it's time to find someone who listens to you. Just a thought...

I would have more respect for an OB, that doesn't want to dole out narcotics for a procedure that doesn't need it.

If she is this nervous about it, maybe it isn't the option for her and she should choose something else. Birth control shouldn't cause this kind of anxiety level.

It's not really anxiety. It's more pain management.
